Bethany students select Homecoming royalty

Twenty Bethany College students were elected to the 2009 Homecoming court during the college’s recent Homecoming festivities.

Every year, Bethany students elect ten female and ten male senior students to be Homecoming candidates. After a second round of voting, this year’s Homecoming royalty were crowned Oct. 9 at the Homecoming talent show.

Nicolette Unruh, Pawnee Rock, Kan., was crowned 2009 Homecoming queen. Homecoming king was Tyrone Russell, Pleasantville, N.J.

Unruh is majoring in theatre and communication. She has been Greek Council president and a member of Alpha Theta Chi. She has also served as a Student Activities Board member, a Bethany cheerleader and editor of the Bethanian yearbook. She is the daughter of Dale and Berny Unruh.

Russell, a theatre and communication major, has been involved in football, peer ministry and Alpha Psi Omega men’s bible study. He is the son of Tyrone Russell Sr. and Zorada Ann Russell.

First runners-up were Eryn Koons, Lindsborg, Kan., and Jamil Owens, Rockwall, Texas.

Koons, an elementary education major, has been involved in CHUMS, Bethany Ambassadors and Peer Ministry. She has been on the dean’s honor roll in addition to serving as an Academic Resource Coordinator. Koons is the daughter of Delwin Wendy and Koons.

Owens is majoring in business management. He is a captain on the football team, and is a member of the Alpha Sigma Nu fraternity and the Business Club. Owens is the son of Miguel and Sonja Cruz.

Second runners-up were Charles “Chock” Hefner, Lindsborg, Kan., and Rachel Bouza, Tonganoxie, Kan.

Hefner, a business management major, has been involved with the student activities board, business club and Blue Key. He has also been a Resident Assistant and an Academic Resource Coordinator. Hefner is the son of Russ and Terry Hefner.

Bouza is majoring in business economics and international business management. She is currently the President of Student Congress, a Senior Resident Assistant and a member of the honors program. In the past, she has served as treasurer and chaplain of Alpha Theta Chi as well as manager of Business Club. Bouza is the daughter of Larry and Ginger Bouza.

Other 2009 Homecoming candidates were:

  • Isaac Chambers, a biology major from Lindsborg, Kan. He is a member of Bio-Chem Club, Tri-Beta Biological Honor Society, Blue Key and Men’s Tennis Team. Chambers is the son of Jeff and Susie Chambers.
  • Kenneth Clary, a business management major from San Diego, Calif. He has participated in football, the Alpha Sigma Nu fraternity and the Green Team. Clary is the son of Tyrone and Macie Clary.
  • Willie Edwards, a physical health and wellness major from Mobile, Ala. At Bethany, he has been a member of the football team. Edwards is the son of Patricia Edwards.
  • Kyle Elder, a health and physical education teaching major from Sharon Springs, Kan. While at Bethany, he has been a part of the basketball team, football team and an assistant coach on the baseball team. Elder is the son of Tim and Bev Elder.
  • John “Rob” Miller, a biology major from Vista, Calif. He has been a member of the basketball team, Blue Key, Bio-Chem Club, the Green Team and has served as a Resident Assistant and Academic Resource Coordinator. Miller is the son of Douglass and Teresa Miller.
  • Jono Painter, a sports management major from Belrose, Australia. While at Bethany, he has been involved with the golf team. Painter is the son of Mel and Chris Painter.
  • Daniel Warner, an accounting and finance major from Ottawa, Kan. At Bethany, he has been involved with the soccer team, Business Club, Student Congress and the Green Team. He is the son of Terrence and Monica Warner.
  • Gilda Calderon Alvarez, a biology and religion major from Yuma, Ariz. She has participated in the Alpha Delta Zeta sorority, chapel choir, cross country and track and field. She also served as an orientation leader and an officer of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Alvarez is the daughter of Gilda Rafaela and Filemon Rodriguez Alvarez.
  • Leah Suzanne Benson, an elementary education major from Salina, Kan. While at Bethany she has been a member of Alpha Theta Chi, art club, a captain of the dance team and a member of the dean’s honor roll. Benson is the daughter of Larry and Eileen Benson.
  • Claire Cole, a business accounting, finance and management major from Kensington, Kan. Having served as business club president, the business career conference co-chair and an NAIA All-Scholar Athlete, she will also graduate out of the honors program. Cole is the daughter of Wes and Stacy Cole.
  • Natalia Anne Peña, a theatre and communication major from Irving, Texas. She has been a member of the tennis team, the lead in the spring theatre production of 2009, editor of the Bethanian yearbook and a part of the Green Team. Peña is the daughter of Isreal and Yolanda Peña.
  • Ariel Lounette Matugas Landrum, an art major from White City, Kan. She has been a reporter for the Messenger, Bethany’s student newspaper, and a layout designer for the Bethanian, Bethany’s yearbook. Landrum is the daughter of Christopher Landrum and Joanna Matugas.
  • Meggan LeAnn Perkins, a psychology major from Grand Prairie, Texas. While at Bethany, she has served as the Student Congress Vice President, a member of Beta Tau Sigma and a Bethany Ambassador. Perkins is the daughter of Otis and Maryann Perkins.
  • Emily Zimmerman, a business management and sports management major from Fairbury, Neb. During her time at Bethany, she has been a captain of the softball team, the secretary of Student Congress and an officer for Alpha Theta Chi. Zimmerman is the daughter of Steve and Judy Zimmerman.
