On August 27, an alumnus with a career in higher education will address the Bethany College community.
The opening year convocation, to be held at 10 a.m. in Presser Hall, is free and open to the public. Bethany students, staff and faculty will be in attendance.
Marcus Newsom ’92 is the head track and field coach at Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa. He also serves Wartburg as an assistant athletic director and diversity issues coordinator.
“The life experiences and the paths Marcus has taken after Bethany make him a perfect opening convocation speaker. I know he will inspire the entire Bethany community,” said Bethany College President Edward F. Leonard III.
At Bethany, he earned a Bachelor of Arts in sociology. A transfer from Butler Community College, Newsom participated in football and track earning all-conference honors in both sports. He recently completed his master’s degree at the University of Northern Iowa.
Newsom joined the staff at Wartburg in 1995. His career accolades include being named United States Track Coaches Association Division III Indoor Women’s Coach of the Year in 2010, 2009, 2007, 2005 and 2004. He was also the 2009 USTFCCCA Division III Outdoor Women’s Coach of the Year and has led Wartburg track to 69 indoor and 159 outdoor Division III All-American performances since 1999.
Newsom has added seven indoor and 11 outdoor Iowa Conference women’s, four outdoor and four indoor IIAC men’s and 12 USTFCCCA Division III Central Region women’s indoor and outdoor Coach of the Year honors to his resume along with national awards. His teams have won nine straight indoor women’s conference championships and men’s indoor championships in 2001, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2008 and 2009. The women won 10 consecutive outdoor titles from 2000-2009. The men have won five league outdoor titles since 2002.
