Mark McDonald awarded for service to students

Mark McDonaldLINDSBORG, KAN., December 14, 2011—Mark McDonald, associate professor of biology, is this year’s recipient of the Greg and Beth Pierce Award at Bethany College.

The award, formerly known as the Service to Students Award, honors a Bethany employee who has made exceptional contributions to the lives of students over the years. Established by two Bethany employees in 2001, the honor was founded to identify and reward outstanding efforts in serving students.

McDonald is an associate professor of biology, member of the Faculty Senate, and the former science division chair at Bethany College. He has been a member of the faculty since 1996 and teaches general biology, microbiology, genetics, immunology, ecology, and scientific research and writing. McDonald advises students in pre-medical, pre-veterinary, and other pre-professional health programs and recently appeared on the Doctor’s Orders radio show hosted by alumnus Dr. Kipp Van Camp.

President Edward F. Leonard III announced McDonald as the 2011 honoree, saying, “The recipient of this year’s award is someone who goes out of his way all the time to help students and Bethany…He is acknowledged by students as one of the best professors on campus…In many ways he is helping Bethany as a whole move forward into new possibilities.”

McDonald said, “To receive this award was quite unexpected. There are many on our campus who do so much for our students and all are deserving of recognition, so I am quite honored to have been selected. I am especially grateful to Greg and Beth Pierce whose generosity and contributions to Bethany have made this award possible.”

The award was created by donors Greg and Beth Pierce, former Lindsborg residents and employees of the college, to recognize a Bethany employee who has made a positive impact on students’ lives. Greg Piece was associate professor of criminal justice. Beth Pierce was advancement administrative assistant.
