Kansas approves its first addiction counseling program at Bethany College

LINDSBORG, KAN., September 25, 2012—Bethany College’s addiction counseling program has become the first and only program to be approved by the Behavioral Sciences Regulatory Board (BSRB).

Students who graduate from Bethany with their bachelor’s degree in addiction counseling will fulfill the education requirements they must meet before applying for addiction counselor licensure.

“We are proud to be the first and only program approved in Kansas. Our curriculum gives students all the skills they need to be career-ready, from administering the Substance Abuse Subtle Screening Instrument (SASSI) to being ready for problem gambling certification,” says Valoree Barrett, campus counselor and program coordinator.

“We are excited to offer this program to community college students who were impacted by the changes in licensure regulations. There is a great need for licensed addiction counselors in Kansas, and we are eager to provide the high-quality education necessary to meet those needs.”

BSRB approved Bethany’s program in August 2012, a year after the degree was added to aid students affected by recent changes in counseling regulations. In July 2011, the state of Kansas, which previously required addiction counselors to complete an associate degree, increased the requirements to a four-year degree with an application for licensure through the BSRB. Articulation agreements are being developed with community colleges so students can make a smooth transition to Bethany’s baccalaureate program.

Addiction counselors are in demand in a variety of industries, including criminal justice, education, health care, insurance, inpatient or outpatient treatment, state agencies, and private practice. Counselors can work with adult, adolescent, and family populations with drug and alcohol issues, or they can provide educational prevention services.

Addiction counseling is the only professional counseling field a person with the baccalaureate degree can become licensed to practice counseling in Kansas under the supervision of a clinically licensed mastered degree person.
