President Edward F. Leonard III competed in the Sunflower State Games on July 14, placing first in his age group in the four swim categories, 50-yard and 100-yard backstrokes and 100-yard and 200-yard individual medleys. In those over 30, his times were best in the backstrokes and second-best in the medleys.

Leonard was able to practice for the games this summer while being a third-year volunteer coach for the Lindsborg WaveMakers. This community swim team has 66 participants, including Leonard’s oldest son, Quade.

“It was fun to participate in a passion I haven’t had much time for since becoming Bethany’s president,” said Leonard. His last competitive swim was 18 years ago when he swam almost daily. “It was great coaching the kids and event competing against some of the 15- to 18-year-olds at home meets.”

Leonard swam at his undergraduate alma mater William Jewell College in Liberty, Mo., where he set a number of school records.
