Diplomat and alumnus Randy Berry presents at Bethany

Randy Berry 1Randy Berry, U.S. Consul General in Amsterdam and Bethany College alumnus of 1987, presented “A Diplomat’s Role in the 21st Century” at Messiah Lutheran Church on Oct. 28.

In his talk, Berry discussed the role a diplomat plays given the current national context. He has been instrumental in assisting countries in political reform, along with involvement in urgent humanitarian needs.

“I was never prouder of my own country or culture until I saw it from the outside,” Berry said. When he began his work in Foreign Affairs, he did not expect it to develop into a career. However, after 5 years the job clicked as he began to understand who he was as an American and the role he could play on an international level. While he recognized that there are still difficult issues to solve within the United States, his work has made him grateful for all that we do have.

Berry began his career in Foreign Service in 1993. Since then, he has taken postings in Bangladesh, Egypt, Uganda, South Africa, and Washington, D.C. Berry has
