What is “Triptych?”     Triptych

The theme for the 2015 Messiah Festival is “Triptych.”  A “triptych” is defined as a “picture or relief carving on three panels, typically hinged together side by side and used as an altarpiece” or, “a set of three associated artistic, literary, or musical works intended to be appreciated together.”

This theme was chosen to reflect the three different renderings of the story of Christ, unified in one overall message.  “Jesus Christ Superstar,”  “Passion According to St. Matthew” and “Messiah” each tell a story of Jesus Christ, in different time periods, from different perspectives, and in different musical styles.   Additionally, a triptych represents the three fine arts mediums celebrated in the Messiah Festival of the Arts – visual arts, music, and theatre; three separate mediums, intended to be appreciated together.

General Information About the MFA

The Messiah Festival of the Arts is a ten-day celebration of the fine arts, held around every Holy Week at Bethany College in Lindsborg, KS.  Our mission is to “honor the traditions, explore the new, embrace the excellent.”  Now in it’s 134th season!

Highlights of the MFA include:

  • A new, large-scale Palm Sunday Weekend event each year
  • The traditional and rich performances of Bach’s “Passion According to St. Matthew” every Good Friday, and Handel’s “Messiah” every Easter Sunday, performed by the 300+-person Bethany Oratorio Society, and today’s most renowned operatic soloists
  • Inspiring, high-caliber art exhibits, throughout the community and Bethany campus
  • Engaging theatre productions & workshops

The newest addition to the Messiah Festival is our Education Outreach Program, designed to engage area K-12 students with various aspects of the fine arts.   All Education Outreach Events are funded by grants and generous donations.
