Olympic soccer coach Pia Sundhage to join Bethany as Pearson Professor

Two-time Olympic gold medal-winning women’s soccer coach and FIFA Coach of the Year Pia Sundhage will join Bethany College in January as this year’s Distinguished Pearson Professor of Swedish Studies.

Sundhage will teach a one-credit-hour class during interterm, work with Bethany’s soccer team as well as other regional teams, connect with Women’s Intersport Network in Kansas City, and make several public presentations.

“It is a great honor and pleasure to host one of the world’s greatest coaches, Pia Sundhage, as this year’s Pearson Professor. She joins an impressive cadre of Swedish scholars, scientists, artists, writers, and musicians who have taught at Bethany through the Distinguished Pearson Professorship program,” says President Edward F. Leonard III. “Pia is a tremendous leader, known for her inspiring style and proven results. We excitedly welcome not only soccer fans, but also those who are leaders in their communities and careers, to share in this incredible learning opportunity.”

Pryor to present at Copenhagen University

headshot-web-v_AdamPryorBethany College Assistant Professor of Religion Adam Pryor, Ph.D., was invited to present at the “Incarnation and other Forms of Embodiment” conference at Copenhagen University hosted by the Centre for Naturalism and Christian Semantics.

Pryor will present his paper “The Body of Christ and Phenomenology of the Body” during the conference, which takes place from Dec. 5 to 8. Eleven papers from faculty in five countries will present.

Pryor came to Bethany in 2013. He earned his doctorate and certificate in women’s studies at the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley, Calif., his Master of Divinity at Princeton Theological Seminary, and bachelor’s in theology and philosophy from Lenoir-Rhyne University.

Dvorak to exhibit senior art show, “I Draw the Line”

Small ChildBethany College senior artist Angela Dvorak will exhibit her senior art show, “I Draw the Line,” at Mingenback Art Center on campus from Dec. 7 to 11.

A reception will be held on Sunday, Dec. 8, from 2 to 4 p.m. with a gallery talk by the artist at 2:30 p.m. The exhibition and reception are free and open to the public. Many works will be for sale.

Bethany freshmen and Lindsborg raise money for global charities at the Alternative Gift Market

Alternative Gift MarketBethany College’s 12th Annual Alternative Gift Market ended on November 16. The market ran for a week and through partnership with local businesses, over $2,000 was raised to help communities around the world be more sustainable.

Amy Kay Pavlovich, owner of Connected enjoyed hosting this year’s market. “I appreciate the work of Alternative Gifts International and it is a good fit with the Fair Trade store. It was really fun for me to get to be around students in this setting.”

Board of Directors discusses student housing and Engage the Future campaign, grants sabbaticals and early retirement

The Bethany College Board of Directors convened in October for its fall meeting to discuss new student housing, receive updates on the campus and the Engage the Future campaign, discuss strategic plans for the next several years at the college, and approve two sabbaticals and an early retirement.

Board of Directors welcomes new members, Trust re-elects chair

The Bethany College Board of Directors welcomed two new members, Randy Berry, a career diplomat from Hillside, Colo., and Sean Patty, a business administrator from Ballwin, Mo., to campus for their first meeting in October.

The Bethany College Board of Directors provides the college fiduciary, strategic and generative leadership. Berry and Patty began their three-year terms on July 1.
