| Biology, Chemistry, and Forensic Science Missions
Biology Mission Statement:
The mission of the Bethany College Biology Program is to prepare students for continued study in professional health schools, graduate schools, or for entry-level positions requiring biological and laboratory knowledge and skills.
Student Learning Outcomes:
- Students will demonstrate an understanding of the fundamental principles of the core disciplines of the biological sciences.
- Through elective coursework, EBE's, and/or research experiences, students will engage in an in-depth study of biological questions or issues that are suitable for their particular career track or area of interest.
- Students will be able to relay scientific concepts and issues effectively through written and oral communication.
- Students will develop leadership and interpersonal skills through participation in science-related campus organizations, volunteer / work experiences, and/or engagement in classroom activities.
Chemistry Mission Statement:
The Chemistry Program provides a challenging and supportive environment in which students develop the skills and knowledge pertaining to the scientific method, the fundamental principles of chemistry, and scientific communication.
Student Learning Outcomes:
- Students will demonstrate an awareness and understanding of the role of science and technology in society.
- Students will conduct guided and/or open-ended inquiries into natural phenomena.
- Students will employ logical problem-solving strategies.
- Students will demonstrate an understanding of underlying principles related to, and proficiency in the use of, modern synthesis and instrumental methods.
- Students will possess adequate oral and written scientific communication skills.
- Students will demonstrate the ability to explain a chemical theory or principle and describe its relevance to observable phenomena.
Forensic Science Mission Statement:
The mission of the Forensic Science Program is to provide a challenging and supportive environment in which students develop the skills and knowledge pertaining to the scientific method, scientific communication, and the fundamental principles of chemistry and biology related to forensic science.
Student Learning Outcomes:
- Students in the Forensic Science major will engage in a course of study that will develop understanding of the core principles
of the natural and physical sciences.
- Students in the Forensic Science major will develop practical experience in the field of Forensic Science by engaging in practicum study.
- Students in the Forensic Science major will develop critical thinking and analytical skills.
- Students in the Forensic Science major will obtain practical introductions to evidence collection and instrumental methods of analysis.
- Students in the Forensic Science major will be able to effectively communicate scientific concepts and laboratory results in written and oral formats.
