Campus Green

Begun in August 2006 with the intention of revitalizing the landscape of Bethany College, Campus Green has done just that.

An attractive front entrance east of Presser Hall, Stolz Circle features a native stone cross-shaped fountain, shrub rose plantings and the relocated Carl Aaron Swensson statue.

A new promenade of flags – a cobblestone walkway with five flags and planters – has replaced an old section of First Street that ran north from Stolz Circle.

A limestone amphitheatre, serving as a performance space and outdoor classroom, stands in the former Wallerstedt Court on campus.

Between the promenade of flags and amphitheatre is a center circle, which includes engraved bricks, celebrating Bethany and members of the Bethany family.

A welcome pavilion, polished signage, and rock pool and fountain greet visitors at the east entrance to campus. Across the street stands a renovated Hahn Gymnasium parking lot.

New sidewalks and walkways have been created for convenience, aesthetic appeal and durability. The college was able to eliminate 35% of previous sidewalks, significantly reducing storm water runoff. The new brick walkways will last approximately 100 years, as compared with 30 years for the sidewalks they replaced.

New outdoor lighting fixtures across campus are more efficient and will ensure campus safety. Each new fixture replaced four old fixtures, thanks to the efficiency of new metal halide lights.

Renewed landscaping and lawns have been designed to be more sustainable. For example, new shrub roses are low-maintenance perennials that require little water and no maintenance.

The previous landscaping in front of Presser Hall included concrete planters and sidewalks. The new Stolz Circle features brick walkways and a circle drive.

The center circle features bronze letters spelling “Bethany College, established 1881,” and a cross, surrounded by engraved bricks.

The new amphitheatre, located in place of the old Wallerstedt Court, hosts outdoor performances and gatherings for students, faculty and staff.

In place of the old east entrance sign, visitors now see new bronze letters on stone planters and a welcome pavilion.

A rocked water feature and pool is on the opposite side of the pavilion, on one of the many new brick pathways around campus.

The old First Street, running north through campus, included concrete planters and sidewalks. The new promenade of flags includes a brick walkway and native stone planters.

The Old Main Memorial has been moved. Stones featuring a replica of the "Bethania" stone from Old Main and the new Bethany logo are included in the new fountains between the library and the amphitheatre.

Central green space across campus includes the gazebo and a new Swedish flag.
