Pledging to Alpha Theta Chi sorority as a freshman was collectively my most memorable moment at Bethany College. Through the sorority I have met several new people. As part of an EBE, I worked with Dr. Mark McDonald to manage the operations of Nelson 116, the student-run coffee shop/smoothie bar on campus. Part of my duties included researching different point of sale systems, product research, employee scheduling, and organizing a grand opening. Successfully completing these tasks took the help of students, faculty, staff, and even community members. However, I didn’t have many connections to the Bethany campus or Lindsborg community at the time. Therefore, working with Nelson 116 forced me out of my comfort zone. Being pushed to contact individuals outside of my normal social circle helped me to develop my communication skills and grow as a person. Furthermore, witnessing people’s willingness to help me in my endeavors was a very humbling experience and made me feel truly blessed to be a part of such a supportive community.

My most memorable experience has to be Hyllingsfest and being a part of the parade. So many people cheering and the support they give not only to the Swedish traditions but also to Bethany College and our athletic programs. It was nice to see people even who graduated come back and be a part of their alma mater. It makes me feel like I have one big family and makes the saying true “Once a Swede, Always a Swede!”
Name: Taryn Henning
Major: Athletic Training
Hometown: Winfield, Kansas
Involvements (sports, clubs, organizations): Athletic Training
Plans for the future: to attend a physician’s assistant graduate program
Why did you choose to go to Bethany?
I chose Bethany because it was a small school, the professors really seemed to care and everybody is nice!
Here is Taryn’s Bethany Story….
A lot of my experiences have to do with athletic training since I spend most of my day in the AT room. There have been a lot of injuries that I have had to evaluate or treat and when I know what is wrong and can treat them is a great feeling. The athletic training room is always a great learning place! There is always some new injury or a different person rehabbing and I will have to get creative and know how to treat them or give them the right exercises! Just the other day I was the first one to test an athlete for his MCL. Even though it was sad for him because he was out for the season it was really great for me to get that experience and to know what that feels like. Being a part of the Athletic Training program has really helped me learn how to be a leader and will really help me continue on with my goal of being a physician’s assistant.

Why did you choose to go to Bethany? My admissions rep, Nick Nothern, refused to let me say no to Bethany. He gave me 110 reasons to choose Bethany. I ended up falling in love with the community and everything Bethany is.
Here is Kylee’s Bethany Story….
In my Quest II class we had an assignment to group up and create a servant leadership project. My group chose to go to Bethany Home and build flower boxes as well as make May Day baskets for the residents. We ended up making about 100 May Day baskets that we took to the residents. I remember walking through the halls listening to their program coordinator tell us about how one man had just lost a friend and hadn’t been talking to anyone for weeks. As she was telling us about how the man’s struggle was beginning to affect his health we walked past his room and he was holding up his May Day basket with the biggest smile on his face. It was so moving to see that our simple project had touched someone’s heart at just the right moment. Sometimes things happen in life that really bog us down. I realized that day that the power of servant leadership is so strong that it can turn someones whole life around. Our group didn’t do anything big. We were really just completing a class assignment. I believe that it was the power of God working through us in that moment. Not only did we help that man get out of a gloomy time, but we learned how easy it is to be servant leaders in our every day lives. I’m so thankful for that opportunity Bethany gave to me.

Hometown: Dallas, TX
Involvements (sports, clubs, organizations): Cross Country/ Track, Business Club, Alpha Delta Zeta, Greek Council, Pathfinders
Plans for the future: Where ever life leads me
Why did you choose to go to Bethany? I chose to go to Bethany College because I wanted to experience a new atmosphere outside of my comfort zone as well as being able to keep on running in the college level.
Here is Araceli’s Bethany Story….
A positive experience I’ve had while attending Bethany College was being able to have opportunities to take initiation for what I want to do. The past summer I worked in the accounting office at Bethany with Terran Corwin and for me it was a great experience to be around what I am studying in my major. A current and ongoing experience at Bethany is just the people around me. I learned so many new things that I wouldn’t have known about myself and others being in Bethany College. It is just a whole different mood of place that gives me the want to explore new horizons. And like Ethel Barrymore said, “You must learn day by day, year by year to broaden your horizon. The more things you love, the more you are interested in, the more you enjoy, the more you are indignant about, the more you have left when anything happens.”
