Volunteer Opportunity at the Kansas State Fair! Bethany College will be represented with a booth in the Meadowlark building. The dates for the State Fair are September 8th through the 17th with two hour time slots to choose from starting at 9:00 am and going until 9:00 or 10:00 pm. Your admission will be paid, close in parking for those in need, air conditioned environment and the greatest opportunity to visit with alumni, prospective student, faculty, staff, coaches etc. Call Sharon Spohn to arrange a time convenient for you to go work a little and play a lot! Teresa (Kracht) Mastison '88 was recently inducted into the United States Martial Arts Hall of Fame for her contributions towards the development of children's programs in Aikido. Teresa oversees one of the largest children's Aikido programs in the United States in her role as Senior Children's Instructor for Aikido of Phoenix.
Pat Merkel sent us a recent update. Since his graduation in 2005, Pat Merkel first traveled to Tanglewood, Massachusetts to work as a guide for the Boston Symphony Orchestra. After a move to Washington, D.C. he worked as an intern at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in the Grants and Sponsorship area. This work experience coincided with the time the Festival of China was taking place and he was able to experience the biggest Chinese festival in US history. At the end of the internship, Pat was offered a job at the Kennedy Center as Designated Campaigns Assistant and since his hiring, has worked with the Kennedy Center 35th Annual Gala, and fundraising for the 2006 Mark Twain Prize being held in October.

Brian Stevenson '86, of Center, Colorado, is starting his 7th year as the 8th grade social studies teacher at Monte Vista Middle School in Monte Vista, Colorado. He is also starting his second year as a high school sports commentator for Lite 95.3 KSLV radio in Monte Vista, Colorado.
Jill Lundgrin '90 is staying busy with grandchildren (6 now) who live in Charleston, SC, Jacksonville, FL, Gardner, KS and Overbrook, KS. She is a Moderator of her Presbyterian Women for Westminster Presbyterian Church in Charleston. She will be overseeing around 100 active members. She has also just completed training and has her Pug registered as a Certified Therapy Dog with Therapy Dogs Incorporated. She will be active visiting schools, possibly the Veterans Hospital and some care centers. She also plans to get her Chihuahua certified.
Fran Cochran '68 showed her Dr. Emil O. Deere car in the show "Classics by the Sea" at the Ritz-Carlton at Half Moon Bay, CA. July 30, 2006. Bethany alumni pictured are Merlin Larson'61, Kathleen '55 and Dave '52 Hurty, and Don '57 and Karin '61 Mai and Fran '68 and her sister Melinda O'Leary.The card table consisted of her brochure, "Serving 5 Generations,"wrapped around Destination Lindsborg and a Sandzen Brochure. She also had an ariel shot of the Bethany College campus in 1965 showing the home of the Thunderbird and an enlarged print of the postcard (permission given) showing the home town of the Thunderbird with its Main Street. Also on the card table were four (4) Bethany College catalogues, each with a cover of a Sandzen masterpiece which was extremely interesting to art lovers.The big building beyond the cars is the back of the Ritz Carlton. The man she sold the car to in 1984 at 33,000 miles was Dwight Swisher ("66 graduate) and the man who handled repurchasing it for her was Bill Lindholm, both of Lindsborg. Bill was instrumental in helping her transport the car out to California.

Paula (Orwig) Leach '94 has been named the new Coordinator of Early Childhood Special Education for the Hastings Public School District in Minnesota. Paula will coordinate and supervise the staff for the entire birth to age 5 special education program. Paula, her husband and two children currently reside in Cottage Grove, Minnesota.

Scott Krominga '87 is teaching science grades 7-12 in Allen, Nebraska. He and his wife, Peggy, and three daughters live in Moville, Iowa. Scott has been a teacher, coach and sports official for 19 years in the midwest.
Joanne Halstead '83 is working at Nixa High School as a Para-educator in the Special Education department. She has worked for Nixa School district for almost 11 years, working from early childhood special education ages all the way to high school. She is currently training as an Executive Assistant for a start up company in Maryland, and hopes to transfer to this position full time, and possibly relocate to the Baltimore MD/Washington DC area.

Bret Evans '87 has been promoted to Vice President Internet for GE Money Americas - WMC Mortgage in Burbank, CA. After six years with GE Insurance in Kansas City, Bret and his wife Gina are really enjoying Southern California.
Cheryl (Brandt) Primeaux '93 writes us to say she and her husband Joseph are the proud parents of Steven Cody, born June 12, 2006. Joe is a chaplain in the military and Cheryl is currently a stay home mom studying for her first test towards certification as a financial planner.
Julia Gregory '98 is practicing Pediatric Sports Medicine Physician at the Children's Clinic at Willow Creak in Johnson, Arkansas.

Julie Lager '97 will be graduating from Texas A&M University August 11, 2006 with a PhD in Health Education. Her dissertation was titled "The Relationship Among Religious Coping, Psychosocial Factors, and Quality of Life in Individuals with Type 2 Diabetes. She is working as the Director of Health Education and Prevention at the Bryan-College Station Community Health Center in Bryan, TX.
Aaron '04 and Shannon (Lowry) '03 Glendening announce the birth of a baby girl, Jory Lee, born May 12, 2005. Aaron is currently the Athletic Director and teaching secondary PE and Math at Elyria Christian School. He is also the linebackers' coach at Bethany! Shannon is a microbiologist at Hospira in McPherson.

Toby Munz class of 1997, has recently moved to Kingamn, Ks where Toby will be teaching 7th and 8th grade math, coaching football and starting a baseball program at the high school level. His wife Lucia '99 is currently working in Hutchinson at the SRS office. They have 3 wonderful children, Myah (6), Mason (3) and Marley (1 1/2).

Father Joseph Kieffer '87 graduate was ordained a priest for the Roman Catholic Church in May of 2004. He is serving in the Salina Diocese, that's an area that covers the North Central and North West corner of Kansas. He is currently assigned as an associate pastor at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Hays, KS.

Levi Esses '02 just finished his masters of education in sport administration from Wichita State University. He and wife, Janice '01 have moved back to Lindsborg. Janice is starting her sixth season as Head Softball Coach at Bethany and Levi is teaching math at Smoky Valley High School.
On July 15th 2006, Quentin Breese was has honored as the Outstanding Young Band Director of the Year at the Kansas Bandmasters Association 33rd annual convention. Breese earned his Bachelor of Arts in Music Education and Trumpet Performance in 2000 from Bethany College and his Masters of Education from Wichita State University in 2005 and is currently working toward his PhD. At Bethany, he was very involved with the instrumental program. Not only did he play trumpet with numerous performing groups both nationally and internationally but he has also appeared numerous times as the Trumpet Soloist for the Messiah Festival. At Southeast of Saline, Breese has the entire band program including grades 5-12. Under his direction, the students have increased their playing ability and confidence. They have been involved in various festivals and received a superior rating at the Rocky Mountain music festival. Also, more students are auditioning and receiving admittance to the KMEA District honor bands as well as the state bands. He also gives lessons to individuals throughout the year. Breese continues to perform with numerous groups throughout Kansas and is Principal Trumpet for the Salina Symphony, Salina Brass Quintent and for the Salina Community Theatre.

Cotton Smith '62 has been installed as president of the Wetern Writers of America at the organization's national convention in Cody, Wyoming. He will serve a two-year term and oversee the association's creation of a national headquarters and Hall of Fame at the Buffalo Bill Historical Center. More on Cotton. |

Kim (Pitts) Schultz '91shares the news from Overland Park, KS. She and Todd are the proud parents of Audrey Jane born Dec. 16, 2005. She was welcomed home by her sisters Katie Ruth and Gretchen and brother Matthew. Jim '62 and Elsie Pitts are the proud grandparents. Kim is staying at home with the 4 kiddos.

Jason Richard Cromwell was born on Sat. August 12th. He was 7 lbs. 13 oz. Parents are Joel '01 & Sandra (Tinkler) '02 Cromwell. Grandparents are Randy & Darlene Tinkler.

When you combine alumni, friends, family, fun, food, and a little paint ~ what do you get? Bethany volunteers who finished Warner Hall! The painting is outstanding, a total of 543 volunteer hours and donations of $800 were given for this project.
