There are many things about teaching at Bethany that I value greatly. The small size of the classes allows me to know each student as an individual. The relatively small size of the college and the department mean that I get to work with the same student over the course of his or her career at Bethany, this makes possible a depth of understanding that would be impossible at a larger institution. Ideas, issues, strengths, and weaknesses all have a history. Such knowledge makes the conversation richer and more intense. This is a very good thing.
Teaching drawing and painting means helping the student to develop his or her visual language and the subject for which that language is used. While language and subject are always inextricably entwined, the balance of concern can be weighted towards one or the other; in the first year the balance favors language, in the last year or two, the sentiments being expressed are the larger issue.
I am a painter and I am married to a painter. Because of these things I feel very fortunate.
