Softball Preseason Outlook
The softball Swedes kick-off their season Feb. 15 on the road at Oklahoma Christian University. The team will compete in tournaments at McPherson, Hastings, Neb., and Sterling prior to starting conference play March 14 at Sterling College. March 7 will mark the Swedes first home game against Central Christian College.
The Swedes finished the 2006 season 27-19 overall with a 9-7 record in the KCAC. The team hit a bump in the road when senior pitcher Nichelle Coonrod was sidelined with an injury during the third game of conference play.
“We are looking forward to getting the season underway. We lost two good leaders from last season to graduation but look to fill that void with our returning players and newcomers. After coming off a good season and a good recruiting class, we are optimistic about this year,” said head coach Janice Esses.
Top returning players for 2007 are Kelli Noonan, junior short stop from Salina, Kan.; Sarah Logan, sophomore third baseman from Clay Center, Kan.; Darcy Bartz, junior outfielder from Salina, Kan.; Ashley Dunham, senior from Independence, Kan.; Holly Finkbeiner, junior pitcher from Russell, Kan. and Angie Heinen, junior from Valley Falls, Kan.
During KCAC media day, the Swedes were picked by the coaches to finish fourth.
