Music Audition Requirements

Bethany College offers performance awards for students participating in music.

You don’t have to be a music major to receive a music performance award!  Please fill out a Music Questionnaire to get the process started.

In general, performance award winners are required to:
participate in a large ensemble (band, concert choir, chapel choir, orchestra)
take private lessons in that performance area.
Pianists have another option as well (see piano).

For a summary of requirements for the different performance areas - see below.

Vocal Audition Requirements:
Please prepare two selections that are “classical” in nature—similar to what one would
prepare for district or state solo contest.
They should be contrasting in character (one slow, one fast, etc.).
Having one in a foreign language is preferred but not required.
Memorization is strongly recommended.
You may bring your own accompanist, or one can be provided for you if we receive the
          music two weeks in advance.

Piano Audition Requirements:
To audition on piano please prepare two selections:
         1) One memorized solo from the standard repertoire;(meaning piano selections that have stood the test of time, from composers such as Bach, Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Chopin, Schumann, Liszt, Brahms, Bartok, Debussy, Prokofiev, etc. This excludes method teaching pieces or pop arrangements).

2) Another solo selection (memory encouraged).
This can be a contrasting selection from the standard repertoire (preferred). This is a chance to show your versatility as a performer, so most any selection is appropriate, such as a hymn transcription, pop or jazz arrangement, etc.
Your audition rating is determined by your performance of the above two solos.
More information will likely be sought on your involvement on piano at school, or at church.
As a way to further support your rating, you will likely be asked to sight read and play some scales.

S
tudents receiving performance awards for piano are required to:
         1) Enroll in private lessons
         2) EITHER
             a.  Participate in a large ensemble (band, concert choir, chapel choir, orchestra)
                       OR
             b.  Accompany students in private lessons, usually four students a semester.
