Randy Berry '87 began service as Deputy Chief of Mission at the U.S. Embassy in Kathmandu, Nepal in August 2007. Berry is second-in-command at the U.S. Mission, which comprises nearly 750 American and Nepalese employees. Berry transferred to Kathmandu after spending four years in Cape Town, South Africa as the Deputy Principal Officer at the U.S. Consulate General there. He previously has served in Bangladesh, Egypt, and Uganda, as well as at the State Department in Washington D.C., and will soon celebrate his 15th year of service as a Foreign Service Officer. Berry speaks Arabic and Bengali, and reports that he's just begun learning Nepali. "Since Bethany, I've lived 15 of the last 20 years overseas; what I've learned during that time is that there are thousands of Americans all across the world working for positive change at the community level – many of them in very difficult places facing grave challenges. The ethic of social responsibility, a central lesson I picked up at Bethany College, has been instrumental in guiding my career."
