Bethany College Symphonic Band to Perform Nov. 14

The Bethany College Symphonic Band, under the direction of assistant professor of music Doug Talbott, will present its second concert of the 2006 fall semester on Tuesday, Nov. 14, at 7:30 p.m. in Presser Hall Auditorium.
The concert is free and open to the public.
Works to be performed include: Jack Stamp’s arrangement of “The Star Spangled Banner;” “Joy” by Joseph Curiale; “Parade of the Tall Ships” by Jay Chattaway; “Ballet Music” from the opera “Prince Igor” by Alexander Borodin; and “Dusk” by Steven Bryant.
Works by several Bethany art students will be on display throughout the hall in conjunction with the band’s performance of “Norman Rockwell Suite” by Hayato Hirose. “Through a variety of forms, the work will represent committed energy, real focus and the visual voice of the developing artist,” said Frank Shaw, associate professor of art at Bethany.
“Today is the Gift,” by Samuel Hazo, will pay tribute to civil rights activist Rosa Parks. Student narrators David Hardman and Ty Russell will join the band in this work for brass, percussion and voice.
Bethany students Colton LaMay, a classical guitar performance major, and Joel Graham, an instrumental music education and percussion major, will perform solo pieces.
Bethany College, established by Swedish Lutheran immigrants in 1881, is a college of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. The mission of Bethany College is to nurture and challenge individuals in their search for truth and meaning as they live lives of faith, learning and service.
