Bethany News--Clarion Concert
CLARION TO PERFORM AT BETHANY COLLEGE
 
            Clarion, an organ and trumpet ensemble, will perform at Bethany College on Saturday, Nov. 18, at 7:30 p.m.
            The concert is free and open to the public.
            Members of the ensemble are organist Melody Steed, assistant professor of music at Bethany, and Keith Benjamin, professor of trumpet at University of Missouri/Kansas City Conservatory of Music and Dance. They will be joined by Bethany alumni Andrew Bishop on trumpet.
            The program will be Concerto in C for Two Trumpets, RV 537, by Antonio Vivaldi; Ballad by R. Bernard Fitzgerald; Four Themes on Paintings of Edward Munch by Anthony Plog; Andante by Oskar Frederik Lindberg; Okna by Petr Eben; and Litanies by Jehan Alain.
            Steed teaches organ and music theory at Bethany and serves as the chapel organist and coordinator of sacred music. She has degrees in organ performance from the University of Northern Iowa and the College-Conservatory of Music at the University of Cincinnati. She has a doctorate in musical arts from the University of Southern California. An active recitalist, she has been featured performer at the regional and national conventions of the American Guild of Organists. In January 2006, she was featured soloist on National Public Radio’s “Pipe Dreams Live!”
            Benjamin has a doctorate of musical arts degree and a performer’s certificate from the Eastman School of Music. He is principal trumpet with the Colorado MahlerFest and is extra trumpet with the St. Louis and Kansas City symphonies. An active recitalist and chamber musician, he is the first trumpet in the Missouri Brass Quintet. He is a studio and commercial musician and recorded the “signature spot” for CNBC-TV.
            Clarion has released two recordings:”Clarion: New Music for Trumpet and Organ” in 1994 and “Clarion: New Vintage” in 2001.
            They have recently completed a tour of Hungary and Romania.
            Bishop received a bachelor’s degree in trumpet performance from Bethany in 2002 and received his Masters of Music from the University of Missouri. He has performed with the Wichita Symphony, Wichita Brass Quintet, the Epic Brass Quintet and the Missouri Chamber Symphony.
