BETHANY JAZZ BAND TO PERFORM DEC. 5
The Bethany Jazz Ensemble, directed by Doug Talbott, assistant professor of music, will perform Tuesday, Dec. 5, at 7:30 p.m. in Presser Hall. The concert will be highlighted by several soloists and a wide variety of jazz styles.
The concert is free and open to the public.
The 22-piece “big band” will pay tribute to famed jazz trumpeter Maynard Ferguson, who died this fall, by performing three works his bands recorded: “Birdland,” “Gospel John” and “Gonna Fly Now,” the theme from “Rocky,” featuring Bethany alumni Mike Dreier as the guest trumpet soloist.
Three vocalists will be featured in the concert: senior Jacque Goetsch in “Somebody Loves Me”; junior Ashley Coffman in “When Sunny Gets Blue”; and sophomore John Carson in “Come Fly With Me.”
The band also will perform the holiday classic “Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer,” with the melody played in ballad, swing, rock and salsa styles.
Other works to be performed are Dave Wolpe’s arrangement of George and Ira Gershwin’s “Fascinatng Rhythm”; Mark Taylor’s “Steamsville”; “What’s Going On” by Marvin Gaye; “Hold On I’m Comin’” by Isaac Hayes; and the “Blues Brothers Revue.”
