BETHANY COLLEGE PRESENTS “TWO ROOMS”
The Bethany College fall theatre production, “Two Rooms,” by Lee Blessing, will be presented Nov. 9, 10 and 11 at 7:30 p.m. in Burnett Theatre.
Admission is $5, free for Bethany students, faculty and staff.
The play is about an American professor at a university in Beirut, Lebanon, who is abducted and held captive in a tiny cell. Back in the United States, his wife clears out his office and spends all of her time in the empty room, trying to feel what he is feeling.
Zach Allen, Smith Center sophomore, plays professor Michael Wells; Brianna Kaiser, Hoisington freshman, plays his wife Lainie; Cody Whetstone, Lindsborg senior, plays freelance journalist Walker Harris; and Stephanie Roets, Salina junior, plays reporter Ellen Van Oss.
The play will be performed in the round, with the audience surrounding the stage on all four sides. “The audience is able to concentrate more, and it increases the emotional stake an audience has in a play,” said the play’s director Greg LeGault, assistant professor of theatre at Bethany College.
Allen feels that he will have to give his best performance since the audience will be able to see every mistake. “The audience is four to five feet away,” he said.
The play relates to current times even though it was written in 1989, said LeGault. Its universal themes include loyalty and patriotism. LeGault also compares it to a love story. “It’s about two people being in love who can’t be together,” he said.
The story line and three-dimensional characters make add to the play’s impact. “It’s emotional. It will hit you,” Allen said.
Bethany College, established by Swedish Lutheran immigrants in 1881, is a college of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. The mission of Bethany College is to nurture and challenge individuals in their search for truth and meaning as they lead lives of faith, learning and service.
