BETHANY BAND TO PERFORM WITH WEST POINT TROMBONIST

LINDSBORG, Kan.--The Bethany College Symphonic Band, under the direction of professor Doug Talbott, will present its annual Holy Week concert Monday, April 10, at 7:30 p.m. in Presser Hall on the Bethany campus.

Sergeant First Class Martin Tyce, a 1989 Bethany alumnus, is this year’s special guest artist. He will perform two numbers with the band. He is the trombone section leader of the United States Military Academy Concert Band, West Point, N.Y. Tyce will be featured on Arthur Pryor’s entertaining "Blue Bells of Scotland" and Trygve Madsen’s "Concerto for Trombone and Orchestra." In addition, Bethany instrumentalists will work in lesson and master-class settings with Tyce.

"What a trill it is to have Marty back on campus with us," Talbott said. "Not only is he a marvelous performer, he really enjoys returning to Bethany and working with our students as well as those in the public schools. It will be a great music-education experience for our members and an exciting concert for our audience."

Other selections to be presented by the ensemble include Jack Stamp’s meaningful arrangement of "The Star Spangled Banner," the beautiful "Sleep" by Eric Whitacre; James Swearingen’s "Into the Joy of Spring" under the direction of Sarah McClaren, a senior music-education major from Norwich, Kan.; and Calvin Custer’s "Hymn Fantasy," an exciting free-form theme and variation treatment of three popular hymns.

The public is invited to a reception for Tyce and the Bethany Symphonic Band following the concert in the lobby of Presser Hall.

Bethany College, established by Swedish Lutheran immigrants in 1881, is a college of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. The mission of Bethany College is to nurture and challenge individuals in their search for truth and meaning as they lead lives of faith, learning and service.
