BETHANY TO HOST "OCEANS OF KANSAS" PALENTOLOGIST
LINDSBORG, Kan.-- Author and paleontologist Mike Everhart will speak Oct. 3 on the Bethany College campus about his recent book, "Oceans of Kansas: Natural History of the Western Interior Sea."
The free public lecture will be held at 7:30 p.m. in Lindquist Hall of the Wallerstedt Library on the Lindsborg campus. The lecture is sponsored by the Bethany College chapter of Tri-Beta, the national biological honor society for students.
Everhart, adjunct curator of paleontology at the Sternberg Museum of Natural History in Hays, Kansas, is an expert on the Late Cretaceous of western Kansas. He is the creator of the award-winning "Oceans of Kansas" paleontology website at www.oceansofkansas.com. He lives in Derby, Kansas.
In his book "Oceans of Kansas," published in 2005, Everhart describes Kansas five million years ago, when giant sharks, marine reptiles called mosasaurs, pteranodons, and birds with teeth flourished in and around a shallow sea. Everhart re-creates the animals and the world in which they lived, and presents the fruits of the latest research into the natural history of America's ancient inland sea.
"Oceans of Kansas: Natural History of the Western Interior Sea" has been selected as a main selection of the Discovery Channel Book Club, for the 2006 Kansas Notable Book List, and most recently, as featured book from Kansas for the National Book Festival in Washington D.C.
Everhart has collected fossils in Western Kansas for more than 30 years. He has served as president of the Kansas Academy of Science and currently serves as editor of the Transactions of the Kansas Academy of Science.
