BETHANY WELCOMES NEW FACULTY AND STAFF
LINDSBORG, Kan.—Bethany College welcomes two new full-time, tenure-track professors, Adebanjo Oriade and Melissa Seacat; a new staff member with teaching duties, Jody Miller; and six new part-time instructors, Carol Brandert, Susan Cantrell, Jennifer Gage, Chad May, Irene Nielsen and Rebecca Sandoval-Kennedy.
            Oriade is assistant professor of physics.
            Oriade received his Ph.D. in physics from the University of Delaware, Newark, Del., where he was previously a physics instructor and teaching assistant.
At the university, he was certified in higher education teaching from the Center for Teaching Effectiveness and served as a graduate student senator. In 2003 he was the recipient of a university-wide excellence in teaching award.
From 2001-2007, Oriade was a research assistant and graduate research student at Bartol Research Institute and Department of Physics and Astronomy in Newark, Del., where his research was directed at understanding magnetism in small structures.
            Oriade has co-authored papers appearing in Physics Letters, Physical Review and the Journal of Applied Physics, and has presented at meetings of the American Physical Society, of which he is an active member.
            He holds a master’s in physics, specializing in theoretical physics, from the University of Ibadan in Ibadan, Nigeria, where he has taught. He holds a bachelor’s in physics from the University of Jos in Jos, Nigeria.
            Seacat is assistant professor of physical education.
Seacat holds a master’s in K-12 physical education from Hastings College, Hastings, Neb. She earned her bachelor’s in psychology from Wichita State University and her associate’s in education and psychology from Cowley County Community College. She is a nationally-registered Emergency Medical Technician.
            Seacat most recently taught physical education and health classes at Lansing High School, Lansing, Kan., where she was also head track and field coach. At Lansing she was teacher chair of the wellness committee, a position in which she wrote a wellness policy accepted by the school’s site council and board of education. She created and implemented a new lifetime fitness physical education class to target a less-active student population within the school.
            Seacat also has taught at Anthony Elementary School, Leavenworth, Kan. While there, she chaired the Nutrition and Obesity Prevention Team and edited the school’s newsletter.
            Miller is assistant athletic trainer.
            Miller earned her master’s in sports medicine from the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs. While there, she served as a certified athletic trainer and graduate assistant to a variety of sports teams at the NCAA Division II varsity level, including men’s basketball, men’s soccer and men’s and women’s cross country.
            Miller earned her bachelor’s in sports and exercise science with an emphasis in athletic training at the University of Northern Colorado, Greeley, Colo., where she was a student athletic trainer and teaching assistant.
            Brandert is a part-time instructor in education.
Cantrell is a part-time instructor in business. She will teach a class in human relations.
Gage is a part-time instructor in English. She will teach classes in composition.
Gage holds a Master in Science in teaching, learning and leadership from Oklahoma State University, a Bachelor of Arts in speech communication and secondary education from the University of Northern Colorado and an Associate of Arts in liberal arts from Cottey College, Nevada, Mo.
            Gage previously taught middle-school creative writing, grammar, literature and earth science at Salina Christian Academy, Salina, Kan. She was involved in the school’s newspaper, yearbook and sign language performance club. She has also taught at Sunnybrook Christian School, Stillwater, Okla.
            May is a part-time instructor in English. He will teach a class on the English novel.
May earned his Ph.D. in English at the University of Oregon, where his dissertation won an Ernst Fellowship. He holds a master’s in English from the University of Oregon and a bachelor’s in English from the University of Montana.
May is assistant professor of English at Kansas Wesleyan University. From 2005-2007 he was a visiting assistant professor at the University of Central Arkansas. He has previously taught at the University of Oregon.
            Nielsen is a part-time instructor in psychology. She will teach a class in human sexuality.
Nielsen earned her master’s in maternal newborn nursing from the University of Utah, Salt Lake City, Utah and her bachelor’s in nursing from Gustavus Adolphus College, St. Peter, Minn. She holds a Certificate of Nurse Midwifery and has done further graduate study at the University of Oregon, Eugene, Oregon.
            Nielsen is proprietor of Stockholm Restaurant and Tearoom, Lindsborg, Kan.
            Sandoval-Kennedy is a part-time instructor in social work.
