BETHANY LUTHERAN GIFTS COLLEGE WITH $10,000 FOR STUDENTS
LINDSBORG, Kan.—The opening service for freshmen is held here each fall. Seniors meet here before they process to campus on the morning of their commencement. Over 125 years ago here, Bethany College itself was founded.
Bethany Lutheran Church, Lindsborg, Kan., celebrates strong historical ties and annual rituals with nearby Bethany College. This year, on the 138th anniversary of the church’s founding, it celebrated the college’s future by investing in its students.
The church presented Bethany President Dr. Edward Leonard with a $10,000 gift for the college’s scholarship fund on Aug. 19.
“It is my hope that our gift encourages other congregations to provide gifts that enhance the mission of the college,” said Rev. Dick Monson, pastor of Bethany Lutheran.
The gift was in response to a resolution passed by the congregation to raise money from its members in response to and in appreciation of the college’s significant contribution to the ministry of higher education during the past 125 years. It was supported primarily by individual contributions from members.
“As a college and a community, we are centered on our students. We are so thankful for Bethany Lutheran’s valuable gift to them,” said Pres. Leonard. “As part of the mission and ministry of the ELCA, through the Central States, Arkansas-Oklahoma, and Rocky Mountain Synods, we will continue to help our students grow both in learning and in faith.”
Pres. Leonard preached at the service, which was locally televised.
Bethany College, established by Swedish Lutheran immigrants in 1881, is a college of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. The mission of Bethany College is to nurture and challenge individuals in their search for truth and meaning as they live lives of faith, learning and service. Bethany College is on the Web at www.bethanylb.edu.
