ANDREW BISHOP TO PERFORM ALUMNI GUEST RECITAL AT BETHANY
LINDSBORG, Kan.—Bethany College invites the public to an alumni guest recital by local trumpeter Andrew Bishop on Oct. 4.
The 7:30 p.m. event in Presser Hall will be an eclectic program of chamber music showcasing the versatility of the trumpet. Guest performers include Jodi Frisbie, assistant professor of music at Bethany; and Bishop’s mother, Genevieve, a part-time instructor of music at Bethany.
The recital will include an aria from J.S. Bach’s “Cantata No. 51” for soprano, trumpet, strings and continuo. “Sonata for Trumpet and Piano” by American composer Halsey Stevens will be followed by three movements from “Toot Suite for Trumpet and Jazz Piano” by Claude Bolling.
The second half of the program will feature the premiere performance of a piece Bishop created to honor his father, long-time Bethany College Professor Roger Bishop. The six-movement piece is titled “’The Natural’ – A suite for Brass, Organ and Percussion” and is based on the iconic film score to “The Natural” by composer Randy Newman.
“’The Natural’ is one of my favorite films, and listening to Randy Newman’s score has always brought to life the story of redemption, baseball, and a father-son bond. Dad never knew that I created this piece as a thank-you to him, and two years after he’s been gone, I’m thrilled that I’m finally getting to perform this piece in his honor,” said Bishop.
Bishop created the arrangement in 2005 while working on his master’s degree at the University of Missouri. He is a 2002 graduate of Bethany College.
