BETHANY’S CAMPUS GREEN PROJECT HELPED BY THE SUNDERLAND FOUNDATION
LINDSBORG, Kan.—Bethany College has received a grant of $25,000 from The Sunderland Foundation to help fund the recent renovation of Hahn Gymnasium parking lot on the east side of campus.
As part of Bethany’s ongoing Campus Green initiative, this summer the old asphaltlot was dug up, given a newly-constructed base and laid with new concrete. Additional lighting and green spaces also are being added to enhance the lot.
“Because this parking lot is near athletic facilities and residence halls, renovating it has created a better first impression for visitors to our campus and is a service to our students. We thank The Sunderland Foundation for financially supporting our commitment to provide students with a campus landscape that represents the quality of a Bethany education,” said Bethany President Edward F. Leonard III.
The Sunderland Foundation previously has gifted Bethany with grants to improve the campus and complete deferred maintenance. Two years ago, a grant from the Sunderland Foundation assisted the college in replacing the roof on Stroble-Gibson Centennial Center.
The Kansas City-based Sunderland Foundation was established in 1945 by Lester T. Sunderland, who served as president of the Ash Grove Cement Company for 33 years.
Campus Green is a multi-phase project to renew the central campus landscaping of Bethany College. Phase one, a new circle entrance east of Presser Hall with a water feature and the Carl Aaron Swensson statue, was completed last spring.
Phase two, which is nearing completion, involves replacing the old First Street on campus from Presser Circle north to Swensson Street. In its place is a promenade of flags, featuring a cobblestone walkway, large plants and flagpoles. The phase also includes the renovated Hahn Gymnasium parking lot and a replaced main sewer line on campus.
Bethany College, established by Swedish Lutheran immigrants in 1881, is a college of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.
