LINDSBORG, Kan.—Critically-acclaimed jazz singer and educator Kathy Kosins will perform with the Bethany Jazz Ensemble on Dec. 4 at 8 p.m. in Presser Hall on the Bethany College campus.
Kosins will be in residence at Bethany on Dec. 3 and 4. While on campus, she will lead workshops with Bethany students, as well as with high school students and directors.
“We’re pleased to be able to offer Bethany students and area musicians the opportunity to work with Kathy Kosins, and learn from her experience and talent,” said Doug Talbott, who directs the Bethany Jazz Ensemble.
The Dec. 4 concert is free and open to the public.
Kosins was named one of the top six vocalists of 2005 by the International Association of Jazz Educators and jazz composer of the year in 2001 by the Michigan Council of the Arts.
She possesses “one of the most alluring voices in jazz,” said Chicago Tribune jazz critic Howard Reich.
Kosins also has 200 songs to her credit and is a six-time ASCAP award-winning songwriter.
Kosins’ clinics and workshops, which teach performance skills alongside business strategies for the independent artist, have been offered at wide number of universities and colleges, including the University of Alabama, Purdue and Ohio State University.
She has performed at concerts across the nation, including at the Detroit Festival of the Arts, Crescent Jazz Fest, Carnegie Center Concert Series, Tanglewood and the Jazz Standard in New York. She has opened for Maynard Ferguson and been featured on National Public Radio.
A native of Detroit, Kosins garnered her first professional experience in Detroit R&B and rock bands. In the late 1970s, she went out on the road with electric bassist-turned-singer Michael Henderson, who had just finished a stint with Miles Davis’ electric band.
While doing society and club dates with big bands, Kosins coupled her jazz experience with studio sessions singing jingles. In the 1980s, she sang and arranged background vocals for producer Don Was of Was/Not/Was and worked with Barrett Strong, composer of “Heard It Through the Grapevine.”
Played by over 250 jazz stations, Kosins’ 1996 debut album “All In a Dreams Work” reached the top 20 on the Gavin chart. Her 2002 release “Mood Swings” was followed by “Vintage” in 2005.
