ANNUAL JULTIDE AT BETHANY IS DEC. 2
LINDSBORG, Kan.—Jultide at Bethany, held Sunday Dec. 2 at 4 p.m. in Presser Hall, will feature numerous student soloists and a theme of peace on Earth.
An annual musical celebration of the Christmas season, this year’s Jultide will include performances by the Bethany College Choir and Chamber Choir, directed by Professor Daniel Mahraun, D.M.A.; Bethany College Chapel Choir, directed by Jodi Frisbie, assistant professor of voice and choir; Bethany College / Lindsborg Community Orchestra, directed by Richard Koshgarian, D.M.A.; and handbell ensemble, directed by Professor Melody Turnquist-Steed, D.M.A.
Steed also will serve as accompanist on the organ.
The centerpiece of the celebration will be a performance of “Gloria” by Antonio Vivaldi, featuring the orchestra, choirs and five student soloists: Molly Mumm, soprano, Brighton, Colo.; Mary Seehafer, soprano, Hunter, Kan.; Ann Labes, soprano, Delphos, Kan.; Leslie Klaassen, mezzo soprano, Marquette, Kan.; and Ashley Coffman, mezzo soprano, Lawrence, Kan. Bethany College Assistant Professor of Theatre Greg LeGault and Campus Pastor Noni Strand will share scripture readings.
Local student Benton VanDerWege will sing solos with the Bethany College Choir in “Once in Royal David’s City” and “Movement II” from “Chichester Psalms” by Leonard Bernstein.
VanDerWege, a fifth grader, is an active musician at Lindsborg Middle School and Bethany Lutheran Church. He is the son of Larry and Rebecca VanDerWege – both Bethany College graduates – and the grandson of David and Jayne Norlin. David Norlin is associate professor of social work at the college, and Jayne Norlin is associate vice president for development.
VanDerWege studies voice with Bethany College Professor Daniel Mahraun.
College Choir also will be joined by special guests from area high schools. The guest performers attended Bethany’s fall Bethania Choral Workshop and were accepted into their district choir. They will sing “Laudate pueri” from “Vesperae solennes de Confessore” by Mozart with the college choir and orchestra.
The Bethany College/Lindsborg Community Orchestra will perform “Sentimental Saraband” by Benjamin Britten and “Fantasia on ‘Greensleeves’” by Ralph Vaughan Williams.
Chapel Choir will perform several selections, including “Sing a Joyful Alleluia” by Don Besig, and the handbell ensemble will perform “Lo, How a Rose E’er Blooming” and “Festa” by Arnold Sherman, with bell tree soloists Molly Mumm and Hillary Klaassen.
The audience will be invited to join in singing carols old and new, including “Angels We Have Heard on High,” “Dawning of our Dreams” by Jason Shelton, and “Silent Night.”
A gift to the community, Jultide is free and open to the public.
