BETHANY CHEMISTRY PROFESSOR RECEIVES TRAVEL STIPEND
LINDSBORG, Kan.—Bethany College Professor Loranelle Lockyear has been chosen as the recipient of the Garrett Travel Stipend for Faculty Scholarship for fall 2007.
The Garrett Travel Stipend is intended to defray expenses associated with travel involved in scholarly activities. Lockyear has been chosen for her presentation of the paper “Using Magnetorheological Fluids to Control Flow in Microchannels at the Midwestern Universities Analytical Chemistry Conference, held at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign in November 2007.
Lockyear, an associate professor of chemistry, joined the Bethany College faculty in 2002. She teaches general chemistry, analytical chemistry, physical chemistry and scientific research and writing, and is involved in the Bethany BioChem Club. She will coordinate the new forensic science major at Bethany College, approved by the board of directors this fall.
Lockyear was honored by the college as the recipient of the 2006-2007 Mortvedt Teaching Excellence and Campus Leadership Award. She also was elected to the college’s newly-formed Faculty Senate last year.
Lockyear earned her Bachelor’s of Science in chemistry from the University of Evansville in Indiana, and her doctorate in analytical chemistry at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She has done post-doctoral research with Jed Harrison at the University of Alberta, and has previously taught at Fort Lewis College in Durango, Colo. Her research interests include capillary separations, microfluidics and gas and liquid chromatography.
Bethany College awards two Garrett awards each year. The award is made possible by Gerald R. Garrett, Ph.D., an internationally-renowned scholar in criminal justice and sociology who has taught at and supported the criminal justice program at Bethany College.
