LECTURE SERIES TO BRING SUCCESSFUL BUSINESS ALUMNA BACK TO CAMPUS
LINDSBORG, Kan.—On March 27, Bethany alumna Sharon Reed will speak on “Working on Wall Street Without an Instruction Manual” as part of Bethany College’s Carl F. and Catherine Herman Mauney Distinguished Lectureship Series in Economics and Business.
The lecture will be held at 7:30 p.m. in Lindquist Hall. It is free and open to the public.

Reed has enjoyed a successful career spanning over twenty years in investment banking and the financial services industry. Her experience includes positions in both start-ups and large multinational corporations, which led her to reside in Europe for many years. She has led global teams of up to 1,200 in operations, finance and technology and has planned and implemented numerous business acquisitions and divisional reorganizations.
In 2006, Reed retired from her position as managing director and chief technology officer for the Global Markets Trading Division of Merrill Lynch. She previously served with Merrill Lynch in similar positions, in which she directed strategic decisions regarding centers of excellence for technology and operations as well as outsourcing arrangements. Reed was a key member of the executive management team that spearheaded the firm’s transition to electronic trading. She worked with senior management to analyze and restructure business and product lines to improve profitability and maximize cross-selling opportunities.
Prior to Merrill Lynch, Reed was chief operating officer for the Global Fixed Income Division of Dresdner Kleinwort Benson, a leading global investment bank in Frankfort, Germany. Before joining Dresdner, she was based in London with UBS, where she was Global Head of Middle Office and Product Control for fixed income derivatives. She led this group’s integration efforts during the UBS and Swiss Bank merger.
Reed began her business career with Touche Ross in Albuquerque, New Mexico before relocating to New York to work in the Financial Services Group. After working at Credit Suisse First Boston, in 1988 she joined AIG Financial Products, a start-up venture often regarded as the model for Triple-A rated providers of derivative products. While there, she was instrumental in the establishment of operational and financial controls for the company as well the design of technology infrastructure. In 1993 she left AIG-FP with a group of colleagues to create a structured products derivatives company in partnership with a major Spanish bank.
Reed holds an M.B.A. from the Anderson School of Management at the University of New Mexico and a Bachelor of Science from Bethany College. She also holds a C.P.A., and has attended numerous executive management courses, including courses at Harvard University, the London Business School and M.I.T.
A gift from Dr. C. Herman and Emily Mauney of Albuquerque created an endowment for the Carl F. and Catherine Herman Mauney Distinguished Lectureship Series in Economics and Business, which has brought a business speaker to the Bethany campus every year since 1985. Named in honor of Dr. Herman Mauney’s parents, the fund provides educational and professional development opportunities to students, faculty and friends of Bethany College.
Emily Mauney died in January 2008.
