BETHANY WILL CELEBRATE THE ARTS ON APRIL 8
LINDSBORG, Kan.—Bethany College invites the community to enjoy an evening celebration of the college’s tradition of strength in fine arts.
Events set for April 8 include the public unveiling of a Birger Sandzén painting; a gala concert featuring Bethany students and faculty members; and a public reception. The celebration of Bethany and the arts is held as part of week-long college celebration April 7 through 13, culminating with the inauguration of Edward F. Leonard III as the college’s 13th president.
On April 8, the celebration begins at 6:30 p.m. with a dessert reception in Lindquist Hall. Local woodwind trio Träblås – with Ellen Neufeld, Jay Steinberg and Paula Patterson – will provide music.
At 7 p.m., guests will be invited to move into Wallerstedt Library for the unveiling of a newly-hung Birger Sandzén painting. The unveiling pays homage to the reputation of nationally-recognized artist and longtime Bethany Professor Birger Sandzén, and to his lasting influence at the college. Staff from Birger Sandzén Memorial Gallery, as well as Bethany faculty members and students, will be on hand to share information about the work.
Following the unveiling will be a gala concert in Presser Hall, presented by the Bethany College Departments of Music, Theatre and Art. The program will feature the music of Claude Debussy, Scott Joplin and Stephen Sondheim, and include a sing-a-long of favorite George Gershwin songs. The Bethany College Choir and the Bethany College Dixieland Band will perform.
A display in Presser Hall lobby will feature work by current art students at Bethany, including sculpture by Omar Ogeerally; painting by Noah Flores and Kaci Critchfield; and ceramic work by Kimber Peterson and Cody Suhre.
The celebration will conclude with a reception at Birger Sandzén Memorial Gallery.
Unified by the theme, “to strive, to seek, to soar,” inauguration week is designed to bring students, faculty, staff, alumni and supporters together in a community celebration of the college. For a full schedule of events, visit www.bethanylb.edu/inauguration.
