LINDSBORG, Kan.—A composition by a Bethany College student has caught the attention of executives at Christian radio stations, as well as Sony Records.
Tremayne Blair, Galax, Va., recently was notified by Sony that his song “We Are One” reached the Top Ten in a national underground review.
Blair recently transferred to Bethany, where he is studying music. He sings in the Bethany College Chapel Choir and studies piano with Daniel Masterson, assistant professor of music.
The first person in his family to go to college, Blair said music has been a gift to him.
“I’m blessed,” he said, “and thankful.”
A connection through a family friend, who worked as a sound engineer, led Blair to travel to New York last summer to meet recording executives. While there, he recorded a song with members of a professional choir.
“I got to teach them my music and end up recording it. I’d never been surrounded musicians of that caliber and talent before…I was sitting in awe,” he said. “We were just sitting there looking at each other in amazement.”
Blair’s song urges humans to perceive their similarities rather than their differences. “The concept comes from when we get to heaven, we’re gonna be one,” he said. He wrote the song on a keyboard from Wal-Mart.
A talented improvisational pianist, Blair gave his first concert last August at Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church in Hutchinson, Kan. A second concert is tentatively scheduled for this May.
