BETHANY BAND TO PRESENT COLLEGE-THEMED CONCERT
LINDSBORG, Kan.—On May 13, the Bethany College Symphonic Band will present its final concert of the academic year. With a theme of “One Body, One Bethany,” the band will perform music that speaks to the college’s heritage, mission and future.
The concert will be held at 7:30 p.m. in Presser Hall on the Bethany College campus. It is free and open to the public.
“One Body, One Bethany,” has been Bethany College President Edward F. Leonard III’s theme this year for the college. The phrase highlights the importance of a unified campus community working together to pursue a shared vision. Leonard will officially welcome the audience at the concert.
The program will begin with “October” by Eric Whitacre, reflecting on the college’s founding on October 15, 1881. The audience then will be reminded of Bethany’s Lutheran heritage during “Alleluias,” a musical portrayal of the life of Christ by Jared Spears.
English composer Gustav Holst’s “Moorside March” plays upon the recent educational arrangement Bethany established with Harlaxton College in England, which will allow Bethany students to study abroad there.
Reflection upon the college’s roots will be found in Mark Camphouse’s “Foundation,” which incorporates “Be Still, My Soul” and the traditional American hymn “How Firm a Foundation.”
“Magallanes,” a symphonic poem by Spanish composer Ferrer Ferran, is the story of Ferdinand Magellan’s journey across the Atlantic with a crew of men from Portgual, Italy, France, Greece and England. The diversity of cultures and sounds in the piece parallel growing diversity in students, staff and faculty at the college.
Finally, Franz von Suppe’s “Light Cavalry Overture,” transcribed for band by American composer Henry Fillmore, will showcase an audience favorite and lend humor to the concert.
Associate Professor of Music Doug Talbott directs the symphonic band. Guest ensembles performing during the concert will be the Bethany Saxophone Quartet, led by Bethany College Professor Emeritus David Higbee, and the Bethany Brass Quintet, led by Talbott.
A reception, hosted by the Associated Music Students of Bethany College, will be held following the concert.
