In her speech, Concannon will challenge her fellow graduates to make a difference through their actions. She will deliver the address during commencement, beginning at 3 p.m. May 25 in Presser Hall, Lindsborg.
Last summer, Concannon spent 17 days in Tanzania on a medical mission trip with the Village Life Outreach Project, a non-profit organization based in Cincinnati, Ohio. She traveled with a group of doctors, medical students and volunteers to set up open field clinics, survey families about their medical needs, and teach skills in dental hygiene and water filtration.
The trip helped focus Concannon’s passion for helping others. After graduation, she plans to move to Phoenix, Ariz., and pursue graduate study in the field of nursing. She also plans to continue to do medical mission work through Village Life Outreach and the American Red Cross.
Concannon is majoring in biology and chemistry. She has been an active leader in the Bethany community, serving as senior class president, executive treasurer of Student Congress and freshman class president. She has been concessions coordinator for three years, and is a member of TriBeta Biological Honorary Society, Bio-Chem Club and Student Activities Board.
Concannon also has worked as a tutor and chemistry lab assistant at Bethany College and as a nurse’s assistant at Mitchell County Hospital in Beloit.
Each year, Bethany graduating seniors are invited to prepare and present an original speech for commencement. Students wishing to be the senior speaker deliver their speeches before a committee of faculty, staff and students. The committee then chooses the commencement speech based on quality of the speech and its appeal to graduates, parents and alumni.
Kansas Congressman Jerry Moran will address the graduating class of 2008 at Bethany College during the commencement ceremony. Pastor Ronald T. Glusenkamp of Bethany Lutheran Church, Cherry Hills Village, Colo., will preach during baccalaureate worship at 10:30 a.m.
Bethany College, established by Swedish Lutheran immigrants in 1881, is a college of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America. The mission of Bethany College is to nurture and challenge individuals in their search for truth and meaning as they lead lives of faith, learning and service.
