BETHANY STUDENT SELECTED FOR SOCIAL JUSTICE TRAINING
Bethany student Samantha Reeves has been selected to participate in an Oxfam America intensive leadership training program called the CHANGE Initiative this July.
LINDSBORG, Kan.—Bethany College freshman Samantha Reeves has been selected to participate in an Oxfam America intensive leadership training program called the CHANGE Initiative.
Reeves will attend a workshop July 19 through 25 in Boston. During the week, she will be introduced to social justice issues related to Oxfam America’s mission, such as hunger and poverty, and given training on how to work on one or more of these issues when she is back on campus at Bethany.
Reeves will serve as president of the Bethany Advocacy Team next year.
The CHANGE Initiative “develops capable leaders, who are informed voices for positive social change, and who inspire greater global awareness in others,” according to its Web site. The annual program is open to U.S.-based college students entering their sophomore or junior year. The cost of Reeves’ travel, room and board, and training is covered by Oxfam.
This marks the third consecutive year a Bethany student has been chosen for participation in the program. Previously, students Kimberly Streit and Jenny Hinman attended the workshop.
Reeves graduated from Clear Creek High School in Idaho Springs, Colo., before moving to Wray, Colo.
At Bethany, she is a member of the Honors Program who plays softball and basketball. She is majoring in secondary math education with an endorsement in psychology, and hopes to teach, coach, or pursue a career as a school psychologist.
More information on the workshop she will attend is available at www.oxfamamerica.org/change.
