LINDSBORG, Kan.—Joshua Lindgren and Kimberly Streit are the 2008 recipients of the Bethany College Spencer Bartlett Senior Respect Awards.
The winners were announced at the recent Bethany College academic honors banquet. Lindgren and Streit received bachelor’s from Bethany College May 25.
Lindgren is the son of Kathy and Larry Lindgren, Assaria, Kan. He majored in keyboard performance with an emphasis in organ, earning a Bachelor of Music degree, and graduated magna cum laude.
A leader on campus, Lindgren was president of the Associated Music Students of Bethany College and the Bethany College Ally Group. He was a peer minister, member of Student Congress and contributing writer for the student newspaper.
Lindgren also is an accomplished musician, and presented solo and ensemble performances on the organ, harpsichord, piano and violin. His achievements include a second-place finish in the Twin Cities (Minn.) He performed at the ELCA Small Towns and Rural (STAR) Congregations convention and the ELCA Central States Synod Assembly, and was chosen by the Bethany Music Department to perform during this year’s commencement ceremony.
He is organist for Messiah Lutheran Church in Lindsborg, and formerly served as organist for Falun Lutheran Church. He was assistant fiddler director for the Lindsborg Swedish Folk Dancers.
Next fall, Lindgren will attend Luther Seminary, St. Paul, Minn., in pursuit of his Master of Sacred Music in organ. He has received the full-tuition President's Scholarship.
Streit is the daughter of Gary and Janelle Streit, Tipton, Kan. She majored in psychology and social work, and has earned certification as a Licensed Bachelor of Social Work (LBSW).
While at Bethany, Streit gained extensive experience in advocacy. She founded and led the Bethany Student Advocacy Team and worked with hunger ministries. In 2008, she completed a semester-long practicum at Child Advocacy and Parenting Services in Salina. In 2006, she attended the Oxfam CHANGE Initiative in Boston, Mass., and the Ecumenical Days Advocacy Conference in Washington, D.C.
Streit served the community through her work as a CHUMS mentor at Soderstrom Elementary School in Lindsborg, a chaplaincy intern at Salina Regional Health Center and a volunteer at the Salina Rescue Mission.
On campus, Streit was a member of the Bethany Peer Ministry Team and the Bethany chapter of Habitat for Humanity. She was actively involved in student government and campus ministries, and served as a Bethany Student Ambassador and Bethany Academic Resource Counselor. She also served on faculty and presidential search committees at the college.
In 2006, Streit was a research assistant for Judge David Admire. Admire subsequently presented a paper at Oxford University.
Streit graduated summa cum laude and was a member of the Honors Program. In addition, she was a member of the scholastic honorary Gold Key and the psychology honorary Psi Chi.
Next year Streit will attend Washburn University School of Law as a Child and Family Law Center Fellow.
The Spencer Bartlett Senior Respect Awards are presented each year to the graduating man and woman who best exemplify the following qualities: the greatest respect for God, for the United States of America and for their fellow citizens. The awards are given of memory of Caleb Hall, Vera Hall Bartlett and Spencer Bartlett.
Each year nominations for the awards are gathered from faculty, staff and administration. A selection committee, comprised of the campus pastor, two members of the faculty and two students appointed by Student Congress, makes the final selection. Winners receive a cash award and a certificate, and their names are added to a plaque on display in Presser Hall lobby.
