INTERNATIONAL STUDENT AT BETHANY AWARDED ELCA SCHOLARSHIP
Priyanka Dixit
LINDSBORG, Kan.—Bethany student Priyanka Dixit, Kathmandu, Nepal, is one of 13 international students who have been awarded a scholarship from the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA).
The scholarships, given to students attending one of 28 ELCA colleges and universities, were awarded from the Phoebe Herman Scholarship Endowment Fund through ELCA Vocation and Education.
Dixit, who is majoring in social work, will be a senior next year. While at Bethany, she has participated in the International Student Organization, Bethany Students of Social Work, cross country and track & field. She was named a National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Daktronics All-Scholar Athlete for the 2007 cross country season.
Phoebe Herman was an active Lutheran who lived in Selinsgrove, Pa.  She established the scholarship fund through a 1994 bequest to the ELCA. According to Arne Selbyg, director for colleges and universities, ELCA Vocation and Education, the Vocation and Education unit decided to give preference to students who are not eligible for regular financial aid.
"Each year we are reminded by this competitive process how the colleges and universities that are related to the ELCA try to serve the needs of students from all over the world from all kinds of backgrounds, and how the presence of these students on the campuses of these colleges and universities add to the learning of all the students who choose to attend these institutions," Selbyg said in a May 29 ELCA News press release.
A full list of scholarship winners is available at: http://archive.elca.org/ScriptLib/CO/ELCA_News/encArticleList.asp?article=3874.
