LINDSBORG, Kan.—Janie Tubbs, administrative assistant to the Art Department and Web manager, recently helped teach arts and crafts classes to 32 children ranging is age from five to 12. The June 2 through 6 classes were sponsored by the Lindsborg Arts Council as part of their Summer Arts Program, and were held at the Old Mill Heritage Square in Lindsborg.
This year's theme was "Think Green." Projects Tubbs taught included: plants and mosaic pots; paper maché maracas; aluminum can pop tab bracelets; big can stilts; gyrocopters; and paper flying rings. Bethany faculty, staff, students and community members helped collect various recyclables for the projects. Food Service saved the large cans for the Stilt Project. Others collected toilet paper tubes, bottle caps, plastic bottles, aluminum can pop tabs and shoe strings. “I enjoy the week tremendously! The messier our projects got, the more the kids loved them. And I was pleasantly surprised at how much they [the kids] already know about recycling,” said Tubbs. This is the sixth year Tubbs has participated in the Arts Council's summer program. Also teaching classes during the week were Bethany alumni Lee Becker '76, Gretchen Elliott '97, Kurt Krehbiel '95 and Joyce Peterson '83; and Lindsborg residents Helen Weaver, Sarah Shultz and Irene Nielsen.
