Clinical Experience Sequence and Course Content

Students admitted into the Athletic Training Education Program (ATEP) are required to complete a 5-semester clinical experience at Bethany College.  Students are assigned to each clinical experience by the ATEP Program Director.  Students progress through each experience as they have demonstrated mastery of required content.  The experience will typically begin during the fall term of a student’s sophomore year.  Students will be expected to work an average of 15-20 hours per week during the school term, with some pre-season hours for Fall sports.  After the 5 clinical classes, students should have approximately 900-1300 hours of clinical experience.

 

The first term clinical experience (AT 200) will include content from the following areas:

·         Proper documentation of injured athletes and OTC medication distribution

·         Assess play area/surfaces and recognize potential hazards

·         Apply basic cryotherapy and thermotherapy modalities when instructed

·         Administer basic components of a pre-participation physical exam

·         Select and fit protective devices

·         Construct custom protective devices

·         Tape, splint, wrap, pad or brace (as applicable) joints to prevent injury

·         Apply first-aid techniques using universal precautions

·         Immobilize various body parts

·         Perform basic life-support techniques

·         Stabilize and transport and injured person

·         Select, fit and instruct the proper use of crutches and canes

 

During this term, the student will be exposed to general training room operations, non-contact, contact, and collision sports as well as both male and female athletes at Bethany College.  Proficiencies assigned during this clinical experience will be instructed and assessed by the assigned clinical instructor.

 

The second term clinical experience (AT 301) immerses the athletic training student (ATS) in the completion of competencies related to:

    • Postural deviations and assessment AE 1-1 a-k  1-2 b, d-f
    • ROM and Manual Muscle Testing AE 5-1 c-g, j-l
    • Leg, Ankle and Foot Evaluation AE 6
    • Knee Evaluation AE 6
    • Hip and Pelvis Evaluation AE 6
    • Shoulder Evaluation AE 6
    • Elbow Evaluation AE 6
    • Forearm, wrist, and hand evaluation AE 6
    • Record keeping AE 2-1
    • Palpation AE a,b,d

 

During this term, the student will be exposed to general training room operations, non-contact, contact, and collision sports as well as both male and female athletes at Bethany College. The third term clinical experience (AT 302) immerses the athletic training students (ATS) in the completion of competencies related to:

During this term, the student will be exposed to general training room operations, non-contact, contact, and collision sports as well as both male and female athletes at Bethany College.  Over the course of this clinical experience, a field experience will be included that exposes the ATS to the following:  school nurse’s office, the local general medical doctor’s office and the surgical observations with the Bethany College team physician.  Proficiencies assigned during this clinical experience will be instructed and assessed by the assigned clinical instructor.

 

 

The fourth term clinical experience (AT 403) includes instruction and assessment related to:

During this term, the student will be exposed to general training room operations, non-contact, contact, and collision sports as well as both male and female athletes at Bethany College.  Over the course of this clinical experience, a field experience will be included that exposes the ATS to the following: physical therapy, occupational therapy and observation of several physician assistants at different clinics.  Proficiencies assigned during this clinical experience will be instructed and assessed by the assigned clinical instructor.

 

The fifth term clinical experience (AT 404) includes instruction and assessment related to:

·         Urine analysis GMCD 8

·         Signs, symptoms, predisposing conditions for diseases and conditions of the skin, eyes, ears, nose, throat, respiratory system, cardiovascular system, endocrine system, gastrointestinal tract, eating disorders, STDs, genitourinary tract and organs, gynecological disorders, viral syndromes, neurological disorders and systemic diseases GMCD 9
