Bethany College-Congregation Connections March 2007
A regular update for people and congregations who support Bethany College and its students.
Bethany Presents the 126th “Messiah”
Bethany College will present Handel’s “Messiah” on Palm and Easter Sundays at 3 p.m. and Bach’s “St. Matthew Passion” on Good Friday at 7:30 p.m., both in Presser Hall. Tickets may be purchased by calling 1-800-585-3737; online at www.starticketsplus.com.; at Presser Hall Box Office on Bethany’s campus, open Monday through Friday, 10 a.m.–2 p.m.; or at the Stiefel Theatre Box Office in Salina, Kan., at 151 S. Santa Fe Ave., open noon–5:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.
In addition to these events, there are exhibits, recitals and other concerts taking place throughout campus as part of the 2007 Messiah Festival. Of particular note is “Haunted by God: The Dorothy Day Story,” a one-woman play about Dorothy Day, the co-founder in 1933 of the Catholic Worker movement. It will be presented by Lisa Wagner of the Still Point Theatre Collective in Chicago as the culmination of a four-day residency by Wagner at Bethany. The production depicts how Day’s faith led her to care for the poor, at great personal expense. The play is on Saturday, April 7, at 2 p.m. in Burnett Theatre. Tickets are $3 and may be purchased at the door.

Senior High Youth: Bergie Bus Tour Coming this Summer
Plan now for this once-in-a-lifetime service event! June 9 through June 16, Bethany College will lead the Bergie Bus Tour, a service-learning trip for senior-high youth (grades 9-12) to Oaks Indian Mission, Oaks, Okla., and Metropolitan Lutheran Ministry in Kansas City. Participants will gather at Bethany, then travel to service sites as they learn more about different cultures, needs in our world, and their relationship with God. The tour is named after Shawn “Bergie” Bergstrom, a 1994 graduate of Bethany College. Following his graduation from Bethany, Bergie was called to serve as youth director at Trinity Lutheran Church in Great Bend, Kansas. In 1998 he took a call to Youth and Family Ministry in Seattle, Washington, where he was instrumental in forming LYONS – Lutheran Youth Of North Seattle – a cooperative youth and family ministry among 10 congregations.Shortly before his death in an August 2005 auto accident, Bergstrom conceived the idea of a bus trip that would take youth to various service-learning sites.Funding for 40 youth will be provided by a generous grant from Thrivent.
