Language & Composition
EN101 Thinking and Writing (4 hours) The development of expository and argumentative writing skills through the processes of effective reading, clear thinking, organization, and expression, with appropriate emphasis on grammar and mechanics. Prerequisite: 2.50 grade point average in high school language arts courses (grades 10/11/12) and an English Usage Score of 18 on the Enhanced ACT (English score of 15 on the older version of the ACT). Students who do not have this prerequisite will be required to complete AS003 Introduction to Composition with a grade of C or higher prior to enrolling in EN101.
EN225/325* Travel Writing
This course aims to introduce to the genre of travel writing and give you an opportunity to practice writing it yourself. The types of travel writing introduced through class readings will include: travel essays, travel fiction, travel journalism, and travel service writing. The course will include a 10-day trip out-of-state (to and from New Orleans).
EN301 Writing, Language, and Rhetoric (3 hours) Advanced level composition, with both writing and reading based upon approaches in traditional and modern rhetoric and upon contemporary issues in sociolinguistics, argument, and semantics.
EN302* Introduction to Linguistics (3 hours) A close study of the characteristics of language and language diversity, including semantics, the description of sound systems (phonetics and phonology), grammatical structures (morphology and syntax), dialects of English, and the history of the English language. Prerequisite: EN301 or consent of instructor.
EN321* Creative Writing (3 hours) An introductory course in the theory and practice of writing poetry and short fiction, along with reading of exemplary works of modern poetry and fiction. Prerequisites: EN101 or equivalent and any literature course (or consent of the instructor).

EN212* Young Adult Literature (3 hours) An introduction to literature written about and for young adults. The course will emphasize formal literary analysis and issues of pedagogy as well as a psycho-social analysis of the literary treatment of adolescence. Prerequisites: EN101 or equivalent.
EN224* Classics of Western World Literature (3 hours) A survey of masterpieces of Western world literature of the Classical, Medieval, and Renaissance periods, with an emphasis on the development of Western cultural traditions and the study of poetry as genre, with attention to scansion, meter, and form. Prerequisites: EN101 or equivalent.
EN233* Survey Of American Literature I (3 hours) A survey of American literature from the Colonial period to 1865, with emphasis upon the historical evolution of American letters. Prerequisites: EN101 or equivalent.
EN234* Survey of American Literature II (3 hours) A survey of American literature from 1865 to the present, with emphasis upon the modern and post-modern writers. Prerequisites: EN101 or equivalent.
EN243* Survey of British Literature I (3 hours) A survey of British literature from the Anglo-Saxon period to the English Enlightenment, with emphasis upon the historical evolution of British letters. Prerequisites: EN101 or equivalent.
EN244* Survey of British Literature II (3 hours) A survey of British literature from the Romantic to the contemporary period, with emphasis upon the historical evolution of British letters. Prerequisites: EN101 or equivalent.
EN312* Shakespeare (4 hours) Intensive study of many of the plays and poems, with emphasis on the theatrical, historical, and critical contexts, to show the range and depth of Shakespeare’s works. Prerequisites: EN101 or equivalent.
EN332* Literature of the Great Plains (3 hours) A study of the representative American and Canadian writers of the Plains, with emphasis upon the immigrant experience, the historical and cultural development of the region, and written responses to the land. Prerequisites: EN101 or equivalent.
EN333* The American Novel (4 hours) A study of selected novels of eighteenth through twentieth century America with emphasis upon the evolution of the genre, along with the aesthetics and the social and historical issues addressed within individual works. Prerequisites: EN101 or equivalent.
EN343* The English Novel (4 hours) A study of selected novels of eighteenth through twentieth century Britain, with emphasis upon the evolution of the genre, along with the aesthetics and the social and historical issues addressed within individual works. Prerequisites: EN 101 or equivalent.
EN360* Literature and Criticism (3 hours) A study of contemporary critical approaches and methods as applied to selected works of British and American literature. Prerequisites: EN101 or equivalent.
EN298/398 Special Topics in Literature (3 hours) A study of a specific period, genre, or author(s) not included in the general course of study. Examples: Ethnic Literature, Literature of the Middle Ages, Canadian Literature, Russian Writers, Post-Colonial Literature, Women’s Literature & Feminist Criticism. Prerequisites: EN101 or equivalent.
