ADMISSIONS  Why Bethany?  FAQ
FAQ
Q. How many students attend Bethany College?
A.
Bethany has an enrollment of more than 500 students full and part-time from 27 states and 12 foreign countries. It is a four-year fully accredited, coeducation, residential institution.

Q. What can I have in my room?
A.
You can have anything in your room (refrigerator, TV, microwave, etc.) as long as it has no open coils or flames (toasters, candles, etc.). You can have harmless animals such as fish.  If you have any further questions, you can call or write the Student Life Office for more information.

Q. Is chapel a requirement at Bethany College?
A.
Bethany offers voluntary chapel on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 10:30 - 10:50 a.m. This is a sacred time on campus. No classes or meetings are held so that everyone has the freedom to worship in chapel or find other ways to reflect and renew. Because Christ is the center of our community, worship is an important part of campus life. Because we are Lutheran, we encourage freedom of religious expression, diversity of religious belief and individual choice as to whether to worship.

Q. What kind of social life can I have at Bethany?
A. Bethany is located between Salina, McPherson, Hutchinson and Wichita.  Lindsborg is a great small town, but these places allow us other opportunities to have fun including shopping, eating out, and other social activities.  Yet, there are great possibilities here to broaden your cultural horizons in art, music and theatre.  As an athlete many of you will spend a considerable amount of time with your teammates.  This may include study sessions, practices, and other team gatherings.  This is a great way to develop a common circle of friends.  Bethany has a group called SAB (Student Activities Board). They provide students with fun events on the weekends and sometimes during the week.  Some of the activities that they do are the Annual Talent Show, Twister Tournament, Ice Cream Socials, Dances, Air Band Contests, Swedestock, and many other activities.  These are great events that they provide for our students free of charge.

Q. What are the perks of living on campus?
A.
Living on campus at Bethany is very good for students because of the community atmosphere that we create.  You live with all your friends, and are able to keep active in several different organizations without feeling too overwhelmed.  Also, each student has their own voice mail account that they can even check from off campus (so no answering machines are necessary).  Also, the laundry facilities are free to the students living on campus.  (So parents, this means no quarters for your students!)  There are many good things about living on campus.

Q. Do you have campus security?
A.
Yes.  We feel that our environment is very safe here.  Many students walk across campus at night without hesitation.  Yet, we do have security, and a telephone number students may call any time to talk to a security guard.

Q. Are all the residence halls co-ed?
A.
No.  We have one residence hall that is female only.  Sorry guys.  But, we do have four other halls that are co-ed.  And Bethany also offers a unique situation where upperclassmen can apply to live in one of four houses that are on the perimeter of the Bethany campus.

Q. Can I participate in music without being a music major?
A.
Sure!  In fact, most of the students who fill the music ensembles represent a core group of students who are involved in many other activities around campus.

Q. What kind of intramural sports do we offer?
A.
All night softball is one of the favorites and most attended.  But, we have many other sports including basketball, indoor soccer, volleyball, racket ball, pickle ball, and even ping pong.  You don't have to play professionally to have fun playing intramural sports.
Q. Are computers accessible on campus?
A
. Yes, we have two computer labs, and each student has their own account in the system.  You don't have to pay for the time that you spend on the Internet or with e-mail, so access is unlimited during the library hours (7:30 a.m. to 10:30 p.m.).  Also, you are able to access the server from your room if you bring your own computer.

Q. How's the food?
A.
Sodexho Campus Services caters our food and is considered as one of the best food services across college campuses.  They do a wonderful job by allowing several choices of foods at every meal.  You will almost always be able to find foods in each of these areas: fried, home cooked, vegetarian, Chinese, pasta, salad, deli and cereal bars, as well as a wonderful array of desserts.

Q. What are the visitation hours in the residence halls?
A.
As a freshman, the visitation hours are from 9 a.m. to 1 a.m. during the week, but have 24 hour visitation on the weekends.

Q. What's the Lindsborg community like?
A.
The residents and businesses are very supportive of all the events that happen here at Bethany.  Some people volunteer to be your "host family" while you are away from your own family.  In August, the merchants downtown sponsor a Bingo game where you can win many different prizes from their little shops.  You might want to check out these quaint stores.

Q. What is the difference between ASH and Alma Swensson Hall?
A.
Nothing.  They are one and the same.  ASH is simply an acronym for Alma Swensson Hall (a dominantly freshman residence hall).

Q. What if my roommate smells?
A.
The Student Life staff does a wonderful job of matching students together to be roommates from the information that you fill out on the Student Data Form.  But, in the case you can't get along with your roommate, there is a week at the beginning of the year when you may request a different room/student to live with.

Q. Are there a lot of students who participate in extracurricular activities?
A.
Yes, most of the students who come to Bethany become involved in at least one activity.  Some of the students choose to join several organizations such as social fraternities or sororities, athletic teams, musical groups, and theatre productions.

Q. Are the community bathrooms tolerable?
A. Many students have lived through them, so they must not be too bad.  Actually, most people miss them when they move into the upperclassmen halls because the bathrooms are shared with only three other people.  Also, maintenance cleans the community bathrooms, while you have to clean your own in the other halls.
