Ms. Cindy Boyd (Mathematics)
-Taught a 2-week workshop through the IMPACT grant awarded to USD #305 of Salina and Bethany College for middle level mathematics teachers. The workshop was followed up with coaching/mentoring visits to each teacher from September 2004 through February 2005.
-Continuing work on the Ph.D.

Dr. Tom Claassen (Bethany Academic Support Services)
-Granted a Woodward Award to cover registration for a mini-course on a group tutoring method called Supplemental Instruction.
-Granted a second Woodward Award to attend a regional conference on students with disabilities in higher education.

Paul Gentine (Business)
-Attended National Computational Sciences (National Science Foundation) last summer in San Diego. It was a week long program overviewing changes in the teaching of sciences and mathematics using computer modeling software.
-Developed the Sports Management Major for BC.

Dr. Marlysue Holmquist (Education)
-Wrote a self-study of the Teacher Education Dept. of Bethany College
-Completed an KSDE/NCATE accreditation visit.
-Reviewed programs for the Kansas State Department of Education.
-Began research on "Male Elementary Student Teachers."

Dr. Bruce Kahler (History)
-Continuing research on book-length project: "Soldier State"
-Four book reviews published
-Essay on Birger Sandzen published in Encyclopedia of the Great Plains (University of Nebraska Press, 2004)
-Wrote essay on Mary Bickerdyke to be published in Kansans Who Made a Difference (University Press of Kansas, forthcoming)

Caroline Kahler (Art)
-2005 March, I received a grant from the Greater Salina Community Foundation for Bethany College to publish a catalogue highlighting the art work from the Bethany College art collection in celebration of the 125th year. I will work on this project with student Marissa Phillips and Ron Michael, volunteer collection manager to complete prior to the end of the summer.

-2005 March 4- April 8, Topeka Competition, 12 states juried crafts competition, Juror Isabel Barbuzza, professor of Sculpture from the University of Iowa, Iowa City.
-2005 March 20- April 14, Exhibition- Precious Vessels, Carla Scott mix-media drawings, Caroline Kahler sculptural ceramics at the Waldemar A. Schmidt Gallery, Backman Fine Arts Center, Wartburg College, Waverly, Iowa
-2005 Feb 26- April 7, Exhibition – Manhattan Center for the Arts wrote a grant with the assistance of the artists and was granted funds from the Kansas Arts Commission for this exhibition, Beastly Forms. Two-person exhibition of Lee Becker’s paintings and Caroline Kahler’s functional and sculptural ceramics.
-2005 March 30- Presentation to 125, fifth and sixth grade students from 4 different schools and their teachers at the Manhattan Center for the arts in conjunction with art my art show at the center. I Students made clay seeds to add to the piece Strange Fruit Seeds of Liberation. Art Education Major, Nickie Crosby assisted with the group.
-2005 Feb 12 -Hosted the Greater Federated Women’s Club Art Exhibit, in Lindquist Hall, prepared room with tables and easels for display, registered art work, juried the two dimensional work of students and women club members.
-2004 Nov. 4 - Spent all day with Greg Maxwell, art teaching alumni at Ellenwood High School, showing slides about the art program at Bethany, talking with students and teaching students throwing techniques. (We have recruited two students for the fall from this interaction)
-2004 Attended the Kansas Artist Craftsman Conference in Manhattan, KS
-2004 Two ceramic and fiber pieces were juried into the Kansas Artist Craftsman Exhibition, Manhattan, Kansas.
-2004 Planned, Illustrated, Produced and installed, the Jultide Mural in Downtown Lindsborg, 50 Campus and Community Members helped to paint the three part mural, exhibited in the Sundstrum Building and on Presser Hall Stage.
-2004 Received a Grant from the Smoky Valley Foundation, for the Jultide Mural Project for Bethany College, Lindsborg, Kansas
-2004 Attended State Department Assessment Workshop in Topeka, Topeka, Kansas
-2004 Designed the Christmas card for President Formo, Bethany College, Lindsborg, Kansas

-2004 Twenty-five slides of my textile and ceramic sculptures were featured during March in a slide lecture by textile artist Kelly Frigard of McPherson College at the Art and Design in Helsinki, Finland. The lectures were advertised by TEXO the Scandinavian Fiber Organization, the University of Art and Design and the American Scandinavian Foundation.

Dr. Mark Kozubowski (Biology)
Attended the Natural Systems Agriculture short course at the Land Institute, Salina, Kansas, May 28-30, 2004.
Attended the Adaptation Institute at the Northwest Center for Sustainable Resources, Chemeketa Community College, Salem, Oregon, July 12-17, 2004. This institute was sponsored by NSF.

Dr. Linda Lewis(English)
-Attended a five-week summer seminar of the National Endowment for the Humanities at the University of California-Santa Cruz on the topic of Charles Dickens
-Had an essay on poet Elizabeth Barrett Browning accepted for publication by the URAM [interdisciplinary] Journal, published by the University of Toronto Press (edition now in publication)
-Presented a paper, "Charles Dickens, H.K. Brown and the Illustration of Revolution in A Tale of Two Cities," for the Midwest Victorian Studies Association in Chicago
-Wrote two essays currently under consideration, one by a literary journal, the other in a book collection.
-Presented approximately ten book discussions for the Kansas Humanities Council (in communities throughout the state).

Dr. Loranelle Lockyear (Chemistry)
-Continued work toward the goals our team established at the Annual Curriculum Reform Institute (attended June, 2003), sponsored by the Women and Science Program of the University of Wisconsin. This involved coordination with Facilities to move major instrumentation and to remodel a classroom to provide a group learning environment in the Science Building.
-Worked with a student in a Directed Independent Study (Interterm and Spring 2005) to clean out the chemical stockroom, consolidate chemicals from throughout the Science Building, and compile a complete chemical inventory, eventually targeting unused hazardous chemicals for removal as waste.
Two papers published this year, as a result of a previous summer research fellowship. The citations are:

Submitted final copies of two invited book chapters for the book series Methods in Molecular Biology. The titles of the chapters are: "Solid-phase extraction in packed beds on glass microdevices," and "Reversible, room-temperature bonding of glass devices for microfluidics." The book is to be published sometime in 2005.
- Received a Burmeister grant to attend the Regional American Chemical Society meeting in October, 2004.
-With a colleague at K-State who has an existing ACS-PRF (American Chemical Society – Petroleum Research Fund) grant, submitted an application for a Summer Research Fellowship supplement to that grant. This will provide an opportunity to do research at K-State for 8 – 10 weeks during summer of 2005, and bring some of that technology back to Bethany. The proposal was recommended for funding.

Dr. Ron MacLennan (Religion)
-Spring-Summer 2004, completion of sabbatical, working on a book on rural ministry and the theology of Paul Tillich
