Men 07

2007 Swede Tennis
The men have now gone 3 years without losing a conference match with two straight national tournament berths.

The Bethany College women’s tennis team started off their season Saturday with a win against Nebraska Wesleyan (5-4) and a loss against William Jewell College (4-5). William Jewell began the season ranked 24th in the NAIA.
In 2006, both the men’s and women’s tennis teams won KCAC regular and post season championships and NAIA Region IV titles. Head coach Vic Bateman said the depth of his 2006 teams were key in winning.
“The men’s team was the most talented and deep team in the region,” Bateman said. He added that his top athletes were able to pull the team through when they needed it the most.
The Swedes return nearly all qualifying women from last year while the men enter 2007 with a young team.
“For the men there are three seniors in the top four this year, but it will come down to how our younger guys play and how much we can improve our doubles,” said Bateman. The Swede men lost their number two athlete from last year due to ineligibility this year.
“Both teams will need everyone to improve as depth is the key to winning this year,” Bateman added.
Bateman expects both teams to again claim conference and regional championships in 2007. For the men, a 2007 championship would be their fourth in as many years and for the women a championship would be their third in four years.
The Swedes continue their season Feb. 28 when both teams travel to Hutchinson Community College.

Tennis at Bethany

Tennis is one of the oldest sports started at Bethany College and has been rich in tradition ever since. Whether it was on the old grass/sandbur patch in the early 1900's or the concrete courts we now have; the Swedes know how to win.

The men hold 45 conference titles and will be working towards their 46th title in 2006-2007. The women have won 4 out of 6 titles in the past years including two appearances to the national tournament.

The Swedes compete in the KCAC Conference and are a part of the NAIA which places them in the region IV.

Bethany tennis is proud to have most of their student-athletes from the all over the US, as we primarily recruit American players. We like to keep 10-12 players on each roster while in competition we play 6 singles positions and 3 doubles positions. Our main conference competition is within state, but we do travel and compete in Nebraska, Missouri, South Carolina, Oklahoma, and Texas. Last  year our spring break trip took us to Hilton Head, SC where we were fortunate to receive the tutoring of sports psychologist, and Bethany Alumni, Dr. Bryce Young, who has worked with many ATP level players in the past.

Bethany has 15 intercollegiate sports, and it is possible to compete in more than one sport if you have the ability.  Both our men's and women's tennis seasons are in the spring, but we do play a fall schedule also.

Success comes just as importantly in the classroom as it does on the court. Numerous academic all-Americans have played for the swedes along with several teams that have qualified as an academic all-American team.

So, what do you think, do you want to be apart of the tradition? We'd sure like to have you on our court.
