| Music: Choir European Tour |
Following Bethany’s 2008 Commencement exercises and Memorial Day, the Bethany College Choir and Chamber Choir will depart for their sixth European tour.

This year’s tour is inspired by Bethany’s heritage—it’s heritage as founded by Swedes, and its heritage as an institution of the Lutheran church. While in Sweden, the choirs will visit Sweden’s capital city of Stockholm; Sunnemo, the home of Bethany’s founders; and Munkfors, Lindsborg’s sister city.

The choirs’ time in Germany will include visits to the capital city of Berlin; Bach-related sites such as Leipzig, Eisenach, and Arnstadt; and sites associated with Luther and Reformation history such as Wittenberg, Erfurt, and Wartburg Castle.

The Choirs’ performance schedule will include worship services, luncheon performances, and full evening concerts. Venues will include small village churches, historic cathedrals, and everything in between.

The repertoire will include works inspired by the theme of the tour with works by the following: Felix Mendelssohn; the late Eskil Hemberg, Swedish composer and conductor who was a visiting professor at Bethany in 2000; Johann Walter, who published the first Lutheran hymnal; and J.S. Bach. Additional works by Heinrich Schütz, Ola Gjeilo, Trond Kverno, Kirke Mechem, John Muehleisen, Cecil Effinger, and settings of American folk hymns will also be part of the program.
