BETHANY JAZZ ENSEMBLE IN CONCERT MAY 6
LINDSBORG, Kan.—The 21-member Bethany Jazz Ensemble will perform May 6 at 7:30 p.m. in Presser Hall on the Bethany College campus.
The concert, which will highlight the variety of sounds and styles found in jazz from the 1920s to the present, is free and open to the public. A reception sponsored by the Associated Music Students of Bethany College will follow.
Music to be performed from the earlier days of jazz includes “Sweet Georgia Brown” as recorded by Count Basie, as well as Irving Berlin’s “Blue Skies,” featuring senior vocalist Ashley Coffman, Lawrence, Kan. From the 1970s come “Get It On” by the jazz rock group Chase, Tower of Power’s “You’re Still A Young Man” and two numbers recorded by Maynard Ferguson: “Sesame Street” and “Chameleon.”
From the 1990s, audience members will hear “Pig-Lickin’ Blues,” a down and dirty 16-bar blues, and “Ceiling Dogs,” a rock shuffle set in the traditional 12-blues form. The concert will conclude with an exciting “tongue-in-cheek” 2006 Les Hooper arrangement of the theme from the Twentieth Century Fox Television Series “The Simpsons.”
Associate Professor of Music Doug Talbott directs the ensemble, which recently performed at the Wichita Jazz Festival. It has been a regular participant for the last 17 years of the Wichita Jazz Festival.
A special guest ensemble during the concert will be the Percussion Quartet – 3 Djembes and Djun Djun, coached by Dean Kranzler.
Soloists during the show will include Jamie Nelson, Marquette, Kan., and Joel Graham, Lindsborg, Kan., on set; Jenny Schmidt, Sterling, Neb., on piano; Steve Jirak, Lindsborg, Kan., on guitar; Bill Olson, Lindsborg, Kan., on trombone; Daniel Spears, Conway Springs, Kan., Sean Boller, Lindsborg, Kan., and Mackenzie Becker, Plainville, Kan., on trumpet; Serenity House, Marquette, Kan., on baritone sax; Kenny Turner, Marquette, Kan., on tenor sax; Anastasia Horn, Weskan, Kan., on soprano sax; and Ashley Coffman, Lawrence, Kan., on alto sax.
