ROCKAR! STOCKAR! THOR OCH HANS BOCKAR!
ROCKAR! STOCKAR! THOR OCH HANS BOCKAR!
ROCKAR! STOCKAR! THOR OCH HANS BOCKAR!
KOR IGENOM! KOR IGENOM! TJO! TJO! TJO!
BETHANIA!
The Bethany Cheer:
For decades, Bethany students and alumni have rallied to Bethany athletic competition with this cheer.
It was back in 1903 when the "Terrible Swedes" - feared and respected by all gridiron opponents - were facing a strong opponent on the football field. Bennie Owen, the Bethany Coach, was ready in those days to take on colleges and universities large or small. Excitement among students and other fans was running high. Just as it was kick off time, there rushed onto the field a few leaders of the senior class, giving out with a new yell in Swedish: "Rockar! Stockar!" The chant caught on, and soon it was picked up by the entire student body. Thus was born Bethany's famous Swedish yell, which is still popular.
That senior class had been studying Swedish mythology and was impressed with the thunder, lightening, and power that were illustrated in pictures of god Thor - as he rode through the skies in a chariot pulled by a pair of charging goats. The readings had included an account of a certain Jarl in early Sweden who had placed all of his possessions on a log raft, which then was let into the Baltic Sea, with the idea that wherever the load landed there would be the place where he would build a city, Stockholm.
The translation is something like this:
ROCKAR! STOCKAR! (The jarl wore a jacket or coat - rockar - and was on a log raft - stockar - braving the perils of the Baltic.) THOR OCH HANS BOCKAR! (Thor going ever forward with lightening speed, from pinnacle to pinnacle, driving his irresistible thunderbolts through all opposition.) KOR IGENOM! KOR IGENOM! (Hit that line! Hit that line!) TJO! TJO! TJO! (A Swedish interjection.) BETHANIA! (Bethany!).
