Individual Counseling

Students can meet individually with the counselor to discuss a personal problem that they may be having. Individual counseling sessions with the student involve 5 key components:

  1. clarify and assess current concerns,
  2. determine options available based on the student’s needs,
  3. identify goals to work on while in counseling,
  4. establish a plan that will enable the student to reach his/her identified goals,
  5. recommendations from the counselor about options that the student may need to work on concerning their goals.

Some of the most common issues for which students come to counseling include:

  • grief,
  • eating disorders,
  • relationship issues,
  • alcohol or substance abuse,
  • career uncertainty,
  • depression,
  • academic problems,
  • assertiveness,
  • body image,
  • anger management,
  • conflict management,
  • stress management,
  • anxiety,
  • family issues,
  • situational problems, or
  • physical problems.

Group Counseling

Group counseling is offered in response to student need and interest. Groups provide a confidential atmosphere where students can explore different topics and receive feedback from other students with similar concerns.

Workshops/Presentations

The counseling center is available upon request to present workshops and classroom presentations on a wide variety of topics in order to promote and enhance positive mental health practices. Workshops provide a structured educational component and education/inform the participant on topics such as stress management, assertiveness or relationships. These programs can be requested for classes, campus groups and residence halls. Additionally, individuals or groups of students can request a specific program or topic to meet their particular need. If you would like to request a workshop or need more information, please contact the counseling center.

Crisis Services

For crisis situations or mental health emergencies occurring during office hours, call extension 8230, or stop by the career-counseling services office in the lower level of Warner Hall and advise the staff that you need immediate assistance.

For mental health emergencies after hours, residential students can contact their resident assistant or resident director. Non-residential students can consult the campus directory for emergency numbers.

Consultation

While maintaining confidentiality, the counseling center is available to consult with students, faculty, staff and parents regarding student concerns.

Educational/Stress Management Programs

The programs offered by the counseling center are provided throughout the year. Examples of programs that have been held in the past include:

Sexual Assault Awareness Project,

Great American Smoke-Out Project,

Stress Free Zone Project and

Safe Spring Break Project.

Referral Assistance

In some instances, when the student’s concerns require long-term counseling and/or a more specialized approach, a referral will be made to an appropriate practitioner or agency.

Early Alert Referral

One way student leaders, faculty, staff and administrators can help a troubled student is with the Early Alert Referral Form. The Early Alert Referral Form is one that encourages employees of the college to make a timely and sensitive referral when they have concerns about a student. If the employee has concerns about a student and they know which individual on campus could best assist the student, they need to call or send an Early Alert Referral Form directly to that campus employee. When an employee receives a completed Early Alert Referral Form he/she should contact the referring body to gather the completed information and discuss an action plan. A copy of the Early Alert Referral Form is not sent to the student being referred. If an employee has referred a student to the counselor for assistance, the counselor is unable to share information with the referring body unless the student has given the counselor permission to do so.
