Sigma Alpha Iota

Sigma Alpha Iota (pronounced e-ota) is an International Fraternity for women associated with music. SAI was first established in 1903 in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Our seven founding members were Elizabeth Campbell, Frances Caspari, Minnie Davis Sherril, Leila Farlin Laughlin, Nora Crane Hunt, Georgina Potts, and Mary Storrs Andersen. The purpose of the organization includes seven points held dear by each member:

  • TO FORM chapters of women college students and alumnae who have a sincere interest in music.
  • TO UPHOLD the highest standards of music.
  • TO FURTHER the development of music in America and throughout the world.
  • TO GIVE inspiration and encouragement to members.
  • TO ORGANIZE the cultural life of Sigma Alpha Iota members as a contributing factor to their educational growth.
  • TO SUPPORT the ideals and goals of the member's Alma Mater;
  • TO ADHERE to the highest standards of citizenship in school, community and fraternity life.

    The current active chapter at Bethany College is the Alpha Alpha chapter. Each member of SAI brings her own unique personality and skills. As a diverse group of women, each individual has her own personality and adds to the understanding atmosphere of the group that stresses that the love of music can transcend any difference. One member, Jacquie Goetsch explains why she became a member of SAI:

    I came from Colorado to sing and that is what I have been doing for years. When I first came to Bethany, I was introduced to a musical group for women called Sigma Alpha Iota. The welcoming nature of the SAI sisters quickly endeared me to them and we became friends. When they asked me to become a member, I joined. It was not only fun and educational, but also I was introduced to other women who were already part of the group. I joined SAI because I love music and I want music to be my future. With the aspect of scholarships, jobs, and friends, I couldn't pass up this opportunity. I am currently a senior and am getting ready to cross the stage. But SAI will be a part of my life forever.

    Everyone who is involved with SAI leaves an indellible mark of excellence that the next generation of members can see and hear to this day. We encourage you to look into joining if you enjoy music in any form. Contact Professor Frisbie at ext. 8457 for more information.
