SW101/301 Chicago Urban Life Center (3 hours)

SW120 Social Work and Human Services (3 hours)
The history and development of the social work profession and current fields of social work practice will be introduced and explored. Diversity issues will be introduced related to poverty, gender, and sexual orientation. A community based human service experience will be required. No prerequisites.
SW212 Counseling and Case Management (4 hours)
Introductory level counseling and case management skills are presented from a social work perspective. Students will be introduced to basic interviewing skills and professional writing skills. Various approaches to and tasks of case management will be explored. Social work process and strengths perspective will be emphasized. Students will have opportunity to practice skills within a weekly laboratory setting. Prerequisites: PY101, SO101, SW120, or consent of the instructor. Includes 3 hour laboratory each week.
SW230 Human Behavior and the Social Environment (4 hours)
An introduction and survey of human growth and development over the life span including biological, psychological, social, cultural, and spiritual aspects of development. Multi-dimensional influences on growth and development including gender, sexuality, developmental disability, mental health and illness, neglect, abuse, and violence, prejudice and discrimination, poverty and inequality, crime and delinquency, substance use and abuse, family structure, and grief and loss. Prerequisites: S0101, PY101, or consent of the instructor.
SW240 Social and Cultural Diversity (3 hours)
Study of relations between dominant and minority groups within society with emphasis on the history and experience of the traditionally oppressed minorities in the United States. Study of social stratification and the social and cultural systems which support social differentiation, social classes, and social mobility. Cultural and subculture differences will be considered. Cross-cultural comparisons and experiential activities will be included. Prerequisites: S0101, PY101, or consent of the instructor.
SW305 Child Welfare (3 hours)
This is an upper level elective course that builds on basic understandings of children learned in social work or other disciplines. It will cover a range of services and issues in the child welfare field (i.e., abuse and neglect, mental illness in children, foster care, the juvenile court system, etc.). A wide variety of approaches will be used in the class: lecture, guest speakers, films, discussion, and individual and group projects. Prerequisites: SO101 or PY101.
SW315 Gender, Sexual Orientation, and Family Diversity (4 hours)
The course will provide students with historical and contemporary content with regard to gender roles, sexual orientation, and family diversity. Major historical themes, current issues, multicultural factors, feminist theory, and the impact of these diversity issues on development and human behavior will be considered. Both Systems Theory and Strengths Perspective will be used to integrate models within a social environment. Prerequisites: S0101, PY101, or SW120, or consent of instructor.
SW325 Foundations of Professional Practice (3 hours)
Introduction to the foundations of the Social Work Profession including practice concepts, use of knowledge, and social work values and ethics. Emphasis will be placed on integration of a professional social work perspective and beginning development of a professional identity. Prerequisites: SW120, S0101, PY101, or permission of the instructor. This course is for students already admitted to the Social Work program.
SW330 Social Welfare Policy (3 hours)
Development of the ability to conduct social problem and policy analysis using a selected analytical framework. A range of social welfare policy and programs will be considered. Problem and policy assessment will be informed by the use of empirical studies, government documents, census data, and interviews. A selected policy area will serve as an exemplar. Prerequisites: SW120, EC111, and PS101, or consent of instructor.
SW331 Social Work Practice with Individuals and Families (4 hours)
Study and application of models, theories, strategies, and techniques of social work practice with individuals and families. Emphasis is placed on the integration and synthesis of valuing, thinking, and behaving in the social work practice process. A process model considers practice in three phases: assessment, action/intervention, and evaluating/concluding. Prerequisites: SW315 and SW325 or consent of instructor. Must be admitted to the social work program. Includes 3 hr. lab per week.
SW333 Social Work Practice with Groups, Organizations and Communities (4 hours)
Study and application of models, theories, strategies and techniques of social work practice with groups, organizations and communities. Emphasis is placed on the integration and synthesis of valuing, thinking, and behaving in the social practice process. A process model considers practicing three phases: beginnings (engagement and assessment), middles (action/intervention), and endings (evaluating and concluding). Prerequisites: SW315 and SW325 or consent of instructor. Must be admitted to the social work program. Includes 3 hr. lab per week.
SW371 Social Research Methods (4 hours)
A survey of approaches to research used in the social and behavioral sciences emphasizing the use of empirical and analytical methods in the scientific study to human behavior and social life and program evaluation. Emphasis will be placed on the development of critical thinking skills with the context of social research. Topics include the role of theory in social research; the logic of science; the research process including formulating a research question, review of the literature, constructing hypotheses, measurement, sampling, data collection and data analysis in both quantitative and qualitative approaches; and the ethical standards of scientific inquires.
Students will be required to review research reports and complete a research project. Instruction in data base management and statistical software will be included. Includes weekly 3 hr. laboratory period. Prerequisites: SO101 or SW120 or PS101 and EC/PY201 or MA120 or consent of the instructor.
SW395 Social Work Practicum (12 hours)
A beginning professional social work practice experience under the instruction and supervision of practicum instructor and agency supervisor. Students practice the knowledge, values, and skills specified in the objectives for the social work practicum. Social work practicum is graded satisfactory/unsatisfactory. Prerequisite: Approval of social work faculty and concurrent enrollment in SW396.
SW396 Social Work Seminar (3 hours)
Analysis, synthesis, and evaluation of the beginning professional social work practice experience and the social work foundation knowledge, values, and abilities. The seminar serves as a capstone by requiring students to consider their professional education within the context of their total college experience. Prerequisite: Approval of social work faculty and concurrent enrollment in SW395.
